Blue Jays vs. Athletics Gameday
Toronto enters Tuesday at 72-73 after dropping the series opener 6-5 on a walk-off infield single. The Blue Jays are still 7-3 over their last 10 games and remain in the AL Wild Card race. José Soriano gets the ball as Toronto tries to answer at Sutter Health Park.
Toronto swept Oakland in March, but the Athletics answered with Monday’s 6-5 walk-off win.
The Athletics improved to 58-87 with that victory and are 5-5 over their last 10. Oakland built a 5-1 lead before Toronto rallied to tie it in the ninth, then Jeff McNeil ended it in the bottom half.
The season series still favors Toronto 3-1. Monday was Oakland’s first win over the Blue Jays after getting swept in Toronto to open the season, giving this second meeting a different feel.
First pitch is set for 9:40 PM ET in West Sacramento.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Athletics Odds & Last 5
Toronto remains the favorite for Game 2, with the Blue Jays around -180 on the moneyline and Oakland near +150. The runline has Toronto laying 1.5 runs, while the total is sitting at 9.5.
The Blue Jays have still won three of four meetings this season, keeping the season-series edge so far despite Monday’s loss.
Toronto swept Oakland to open the season before Monday’s 6-5 loss. The Blue Jays have won three of their last five overall, including an 11-0 shutout at Cleveland. Oakland has also won three of five, highlighted by a 9-2 victory over Texas and Monday’s walk-off.
Athletics Stats
Oakland has been respectable at the plate despite its record. The Athletics are batting .247 with a .320 on-base percentage and .404 slugging percentage. Their 174 home runs also give the lineup enough power to punish mistakes.
The pitching staff has been the much bigger problem.
The Athletics carry a team ERA above 5.40, while opponents are batting .268 against them. Oakland has also surrendered more than 200 home runs. The staff has recorded 1,220 strikeouts, but those swing-and-miss numbers haven’t offset the damage allowed.
Oakland showed some of its offensive upside Monday. Henry Bolte homered, stole three bases and scored three times, while Zack Gelof also went deep. Jeff McNeil delivered the winning infield single in the ninth after Toronto had erased a four-run deficit.
The Athletics aren’t lacking young hitters capable of changing a game.

Blue Jays Stats
Toronto’s offense has been more middle-of-the-pack this season. The Blue Jays are batting around .248 with an on-base percentage just above .300. They still have enough power to produce big innings when it gets rolling.
Kazuma Okamoto has supplied that power.
Okamoto has 28 home runs and 81 RBIs. He went deep Monday as the Blue Jays rallied from a 5-1 deficit. Andrés Giménez added a game-tying solo homer in the ninth before Oakland walked it off.
The pitching staff has been steadier, with Toronto carrying an ERA below four. That advantage matters Tuesday because Oakland’s staff has spent the season allowing traffic and home runs. Soriano gives Toronto the stronger starting-pitching numbers.
Monday exposed some problems.
Dylan Cease allowed five runs, four earned, in five innings, while Toronto made costly mistakes in the field and on the bases. The Blue Jays outhit Oakland 9-6 but couldn’t finish the comeback.

Blue Jays vs. Athletics Pitching Matchup
José Soriano gets the start for Toronto with an 11-7 record and 3.52 ERA. The right-hander has 151 strikeouts over 156 innings. His 1.29 WHIP gives the Blue Jays the better numbers on the mound.
Soriano has been one of Toronto’s more dependable starters.
Jack Perkins counters for Oakland with a 3-10 record and 6.50 ERA. He has 116 strikeouts in 98 1/3 innings, but a 1.54 WHIP reflects the traffic he has allowed. Perkins can miss bats, although limiting damage has been the bigger issue.
That difference is difficult to ignore.
Toronto has the lineup to pressure Perkins if his control slips, while Soriano has been much more consistent at keeping runs off the board. Oakland showed Monday that its power can create problems. The Blue Jays still enter Game 2 with the clearer starting-pitching edge.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Athletics bottom line: Toronto owns the stronger starting-pitching matchup, while Oakland’s power remains its best path to another upset.

Blue Jays Athletics Free Pick: Blue Jays -1.5
Here is my Blue Jays Athletics free pick: I’m laying the Blue Jays -1.5, and José Soriano is where this play starts for me. His 3.52 ERA gives Toronto a clear edge over Jack Perkins, who enters with a 6.50 ERA and 1.54 WHIP.
That’s enough of a pitching gap for me to attack the runline on the road.
Monday’s 6-5 loss doesn’t scare me away. Toronto erased a 5-1 deficit before Oakland walked it off, showing Toronto can get into this bullpen.
The starting-pitching gap is too wide for me to ignore at this runline price.
Oakland has enough power to make this uncomfortable, and that’s the runline risk. Still, the Athletics have spent the season trying to overcome one of baseball’s worst pitching staffs.
Toronto has also won three of four meetings this season. More importantly, Perkins has allowed too much traffic for me to trust Oakland to keep this within one run if Soriano gives the Jays six solid innings.
I expect Toronto to have multiple chances with runners aboard. The Blue Jays don’t need an explosion; they need a couple of timely hits and a cleaner night from the pitching staff.
That’s enough for me. I’ll lay the Blue Jays -1.5.
