The first order of business concerning the Twins on Tuesday night is whether or not Miguel Sano will play.
The latest that I have read suggests he will not and the primary evidence to support that claim is that he did not take part in a team workout on Monday at Yankee Stadium. That’s per Twins writer, Jim Souhan.
Sano had returned this weekend to DH after missing nearly the last 40 games with a stress fracture in his shin. In an interview over the weekend, he said the plan is to play in the Wild Card Game but Paul Molitor won’t be reckless.
Defensively, the Twins will be slightly better but Robbie Grossman won’t replace as much as one of Sano’s limbs. Minnesota will have to set the tone with pitching and defense, at least initially.
And Ervin Santana is up for it. His only start against the Yankees came two weeks ago, in New York, when he gave up just two runs but couldn’t make it through the sixth inning. He’s had a fantastic season but has logged 211 innings — the second-most of any pitcher in the American League.
Still, he throws so many innings because he can effectively pitch to contact while keeping the ball in the yard. If he can do that against New York on Tuesday, he’s halfway to a win.
The Twins have lost six postseason series in a row, dating back to 2002 League Championship Series; four of the five losses since then have come against the Yankees.
New York Yankees
Masahiro Tanaka was dominant in his final start of the regular season but not even 15 strikeouts in seven innings was enough to pry the ball out of Luis Severino’s hand.
Severino broke out in 2017 and established himself in the second tier of starting pitchers in the AL, behind the top arms of Corey Kluber and Chris Sale.
He won 14 games, lost just six and finished just under or just over some dangerously low numbers: a .200 opponent’s batting average, 1.00 WHIP and 3.00 ERA.
Now he faces his countryman and 2017 World Baseball Classic teammate for the right to go to Cleveland.
The big advantage Severino has is the bullpen behind him. He need not worry about his pitch count with the options Joe Girardi has at his disposal, unlike Santana, who really has to get deep into the game to maximize Minnesota’s chance. While Santana has to consider economy, Severino will consider nothing but zeros.

Free Minnesota Twin vs. New York Yankees MLB Prediction: the Yankees will win this ballgame.
But it is far from a lock. Aaron Judge hit some more home runs down the stretch but he is not swinging and making solid contact like he was in the first half, not by a long shot.
The Yankees are more than just Judge, though, and will put runs on the board in this one. Minnesota’s bullpen will have a tough time holding things together.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Twins (+200)
Even so, the +200 is worth a shot in a one-game scenario. The Yankees have dominated the Twins in postseasons passed but this is a new regime under Paul Molitor, who is a Manager of the Year candidate despite still seemingly managing for his job next season.
I give the Twins a better shot than one out of three to rally behind their guy, catch a break or two and make the upset happen.
