Guardians vs. White Sox Gameday
The Cleveland Guardians visit the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on Thursday, October 8, for Game 4 of the American League Division Series. First pitch is 8 PM ET on TBS, truTV, UniMás and HBO Max.
Chicago leads the series 2-1, leaving Stephen Vogt’s Guardians facing elimination. Will Venable’s White Sox get another chance to clinch at home. Closing out a division rival is rarely a formality.
Cleveland stayed alive with a 9-3 victory Wednesday. José Ramírez delivered a two-run triple, Jo Adell added a bases-clearing triple, and the Guardians recorded a postseason-record 19 strikeouts.
Chicago still holds the series lead, but Cleveland made sure the celebration plans stayed on hold.
The White Sox swept Houston in the Wild Card round before winning the first two games of this series. Their unconventional pitching strategy has put them one win from the ALCS.
Both managers now face another game without a day off. Nobody needs a motivational speech.

Cleveland Guardians vs. Chicago White Sox Odds & Previous Games
Cleveland opened -117 on the moneyline, with Chicago at -103. The Guardians were -1.5 (+147) on the run line, while the White Sox opened +1.5 (-180).
The total opened at 7.5 runs, with Over +100 and Under -121.
Chicago won Game 1 by a 3-0 score before taking Game 2, 4-3. Short pitching appearances and aggressive bullpen management kept Cleveland’s offense quiet.
That approach unraveled Wednesday when Chicago pitchers issued 10 walks. Cleveland capitalized on the extra baserunners.
The White Sox won seven of 13 regular-season meetings. These division rivals know each other well. Neither manager has many secrets left.

White Sox Stats
Chicago hit 211 home runs and drew 589 walks during the regular season. There’s plenty of power and patience in this lineup.
That approach also produced 1,494 strikeouts. Chicago punishes mistakes, but prolonged stretches without contact remain a concern. Power comes with a price.
Munetaka Murakami hit 36 regular-season homers and added another in Game 1. Colson Montgomery supplies additional power, while Miguel Vargas has reached base eight times this series.
The White Sox finished with a 4.12 ERA.
Their pitchers have succeeded in October through careful matchups and effective relief work. Venable has been creative, and the results have largely justified it.
Guardians Stats
Cleveland finished batting .239 with a .316 on-base percentage and .380 slugging percentage. Timely hitting has been more important than overwhelming opponents.
Ramírez remains Cleveland’s offensive centerpiece. Adell enters Game 4 with three hits and four RBIs in his previous seven at-bats. The Guardians need that supporting production.
Steven Kwan sets the table, while Brayan Rocchio provides another contact option.
Cleveland doesn’t need everybody swinging for the fences. Getting runners aboard and moving them into scoring position remains important.
Cleveland has enough ways to manufacture offense without asking everybody to become a cleanup hitter.
The Guardians posted a 3.77 regular-season ERA. Their pitchers have limited hard contact and kept games manageable, particularly when the offense struggles.
Guardians vs. White Sox Pitching Matchup
Cleveland starts left-hander Parker Messick, who went 12-9 with a 2.56 ERA, 193 strikeouts and a 1.06 WHIP.
Messick allowed two runs on four hits and two walks in Game 1, striking out six. He also posted a 2.45 ERA over 14 2/3 regular-season innings at Rate Field. Familiar surroundings certainly don’t hurt.
Chicago has named rookie left-hander Hagen Smith as its opener.
Smith finished 3-3 with a 1.29 ERA and 41 strikeouts, but his postseason assignments have been brief. He threw 21 pitches Wednesday and returns to open Game 4. Chicago won both his previous postseason starts in this role.

“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Chicago has rested bullpen options, including Grant Taylor, Erick Fedde and Jordan Hicks. Taylor has already recorded a 12-out postseason save. Cleveland faces its own relief decisions. Foster Griffin and Joey Cantillo covered 4 1/3 innings Wednesday, while Cade Smith threw 19 pitches over two innings. Vogt must account for that workload.
Rhys Hoskins and Colin Holderman are not on Cleveland’s ALDS roster.
For bettors checking totals at their preferred sportsbooks, bullpen availability deserves attention. Chicago’s plan depends on several effective relief appearances.
Cleveland Guardians vs. Chicago White Sox bottom line: Messick provides a dependable starting option, while Chicago’s unconventional bullpen approach faces another elimination-game test.

Guardians White Sox Free Pick: Under 7.5
Here is my Guardians White Sox free pick: Under 7.5 (-121). I’m backing a tighter game than Wednesday’s nine-run Cleveland performance might suggest.
My preferred setup is Messick working efficiently enough to keep Chicago from building early scoring threats. The White Sox have power, but they also have hitters who can be pitched to carefully.
I like Cleveland’s chances of keeping the damage limited.
Chicago’s pitching arrangement is the bigger gamble. Smith won’t be asked to carry the entire game, so Venable needs clean innings from the arms following him. One sloppy handoff could ruin an otherwise solid Under.
I’ll trust two managers fighting for their postseason lives to be quicker with the hook than with the excuses.
What I like about this spot is the incentive to prevent the next run rather than save pitchers for later. Vogt can’t afford a Game 5 without winning tonight, and Venable would rather finish the series at home than take his chances in Cleveland. That doesn’t mean either manager can manufacture outs with a stern look from the dugout. I’ve watched enough October baseball to know one walk and a hanging breaking ball can make an Under ticket look pretty foolish.
Still, I’m not chasing yesterday’s offensive outburst. At 7.5, I see enough pitching and enough urgency to keep this game under control.
I’ll pay the -121 and take my chances with the arms. My play is Under 7.5 (-121).
