There’s no way to sugarcoat it: The Miami Marlins are a bad baseball team right now. The team has just seven wins on the year, but has actually won three of its last four. Still, Don Mattingly’s ball club instills no confidence for bettors right now.
The batting has been atrocious, for one. Not one player is batting over .280, with shortstop Miguel Rojas sitting right at that number. He’s been okay, tallying 18 hits and six RBIs, but no one else has been remotely consistent.
To date, the Marlins have been outscored by their opponents by 45 runs, which means the pitching needs to be near perfect in order to win games. Thursday, those pitching duties rest on the shoulders of Caleb Smith.
Smith is 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA. He’s been by far the best man in the rotation, tallying 29 strikeouts to just six walks, and he’s also given up just six earned runs in 23.0 innings.
It’s been a frustrating stretch for Philadelphia. The Phillies have lost five of the last six games including two straight to the Mets. The team can’t seem to find a lot of consistency on the field, especially at the plate. In the last three games, Philly has been outscored 18-2.
It certainly isn’t helping that the team’s most consistent batter, shortstop Jean Segura, has been placed on the 10-day Injured List. Segura’s had a strong start to the year, batting .328 with 10 RBIs.
With the current issues offensively, a lot of Philly’s success rests on its pitching and defense. Thursday, the Phillies will send out starter Aaron Nola, a strong pitcher but one who’s given up a lot of runs. He’s 2-0 but has a 6.84 ERA — he’s given up 17 earned runs in 18.1 innings.

- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of PHI last 7 games
Free Miami Marlins vs. Philadelphia Phillies MLB Prediction:
Sure, the Phillies have lost three in a row (as of Wednesday afternoon), but the home side is much, much better than the visitors. Miami can’t seem to find any consistency and really can’t score, so I’ll take Philly to win in this one.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: UNDER 9.5
9.5 runs is a lot for two teams that aren’t prolific scorers. The total has gone under in five of Philly’s last seven and eight of Miami’s last nine on the road. I think a pretty safe bet is to take the Under here.
MLB Free Score Prediction: Miami 2 – Philadelphia 5
