Rockies vs. Yankees Gameday
Colorado enters Wednesday at 55-89 after dropping the series opener 5-3 at Yankee Stadium. The Rockies have lost five straight road games and are 3-7 over their last 10. Their 25-48 road record has made winning away from Coors Field particularly difficult.
New York improved to 82-62 with Tuesday’s victory and has won 14 of its last 21 games. The Yankees are 6-4 over their last 10 and sit four games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East.
Aaron Judge returned Tuesday, giving New York another major bat for the September stretch.
Judge went hitless in three at-bats after missing more than three months with a rib injury. Heliot Ramos replaced him and delivered a three-run homer in the eighth. Hunter Goodman answered with a two-run shot in the ninth, but New York closed out the 5-3 win.
Game 2 is set for 7:05 PM ET at Yankee Stadium.

Colorado Rockies vs. New York Yankees Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make New York a heavy favorite at -244 on the moneyline, with Colorado returning +202. The Yankees are -115 laying 1.5 runs. The total opened at 9, with the over priced around -112.
Those numbers reflect the sizable gap between these clubs.
New York has won three of its last five games, including Tuesday’s series opener. The Yankees took advantage of Colorado mistakes before Ramos provided the biggest swing with his three-run homer. Colorado has dropped three of five overall and five straight on the road.
Yankees Stats
New York hasn’t needed a huge team batting average to produce runs. The Yankees have combined patience with plenty of power, hitting more than 190 home runs while carrying a slugging percentage above .400. That gives the lineup several ways to hurt opposing pitchers.
Aaron Judge’s return makes that lineup considerably more dangerous.
Judge had been out since May 31 before returning Tuesday and went 0-for-3 in six innings. New York still scored five runs without getting anything from his bat. Ramos supplied the biggest blow after replacing him, launching a three-run homer in the eighth.
The Yankees have also received strong pitching throughout the season.
Cam Schlittler allowed one run on three hits over seven innings Tuesday and struck out 10 without issuing a walk. David Bednar finished the ninth for his 32nd save. New York has now allowed 532 runs through 144 games, one reason its run differential sits at plus-119.

Rockies Stats
Colorado’s offense has been one of the brighter spots during another difficult season. Hunter Goodman continues to supply the biggest power threat in the lineup. His two-run homer Tuesday was his 37th of the year.
TJ Rumfield has also developed into a dependable bat.
Rumfield extended his hitting streak to 12 games Tuesday and continues to produce away from Coors Field. Adael Amador added a solo homer against Schlittler. Colorado managed only three hits through seven innings before making things interesting late.
The pitching staff remains the larger concern. Colorado has carried an ERA well above five while also ranking near the bottom of baseball in strikeouts. Those problems have been especially difficult to overcome on the road.
There were still some positives Tuesday.
Gabriel Hughes allowed only two runs, one earned, over five innings, but defensive mistakes hurt Colorado before the bullpen gave New York separation. The Rockies now have to find a way to slow another deep Yankees lineup in Game 2.

Rockies vs. Yankees Pitching Matchup
Tomoyuki Sugano starts for Colorado with a 12-8 record and 5.19 ERA. The right-hander has recorded 79 strikeouts, but his run prevention has been inconsistent. He’ll face a Yankees lineup that just got Judge back.
Sugano has still found ways to collect wins despite those numbers.
Keeping the ball in the park will be important at Yankee Stadium. Colorado can’t afford to give New York extra baserunners in front of its power hitters. Sugano will need a cleaner outing than his season ERA suggests.
Will Warren gets the ball for New York at 9-6 with a 4.16 ERA and 133 strikeouts. His 1.38 WHIP shows that opponents have created some traffic against him.
Warren has the stronger strikeout profile of the two starters.
Colorado’s lineup can make contact, so Warren may have to work through baserunners rather than cruise. New York has the deeper bullpen and stronger overall run prevention behind him. That gives Warren a little more room for error Wednesday night.
Colorado Rockies vs. New York Yankees bottom line: New York brings the stronger overall roster and home-field edge, while both starting pitchers leave some room for offense.

Rockies Yankees Free Pick: Yankees RL
Here is my Rockies Yankees free pick: I’m laying the Yankees -1.5 for my prediction tonight. New York has won 14 of its last 21 games, and this is a spot where I expect the better team to create some separation.
Colorado’s pitching is the main reason I’m willing to lay the run and a half. Tomoyuki Sugano enters with a 5.19 ERA, and the Rockies have spent most of this season trying to survive one of baseball’s weakest pitching staffs.
Will Warren isn’t exactly untouchable with his 4.16 ERA, but he doesn’t need to be.
New York has enough offensive firepower to turn a small lead into a comfortable one quickly.
The return of Aaron Judge gives the Yankees another weapon, even if he’s still working his way back into form. More importantly for my play, Colorado has lost five straight road games and sits 27 games below .500 away from Coors Field.
Tuesday’s 5-3 Yankees win followed the script pretty well. Colorado hung around before New York created breathing room late, and I see a similar opportunity against Sugano.
I’m not paying the heavy moneyline price when the runline gives me a much better number. I’ll take my chances with New York winning by a couple.
Give me the Yankees -1.5.
