Mets 2020 Season Preview
Ready to check out our 2020 New York Mets predictions? New York has recently learned that Noah Syndergaard is going to require TJ surgery. That’s a huge hit for the strength of the team but their group of starting pitchers is still the strength of the team.
MLB Mets Predictions & Handicapping Insight
Last season Pete Alonso burst onto the scene with a rookie season for the ages. He hit more than 50 homers and was a fun watch throughout the season, especially given that the rest of the lineup was inconsistent at best.
This season the lineup looks a little better thanks to some internal improvement over the course of the season from the likes of Michel Conforto and Brandon Nimmo.

Not having Thor hurts a lot but the rotation was such a strength that the Nets can definitely look at the rotation as an advantage over more other teams.

Key Additions:
- Michael Wacha, SP
- Dellin Betances, RP
Michael Wacha was supposed to be a depth piece but now he is going to have to actually perform. I think he is up to the task and generally is better than most other 5th starters, certainly, he has a higher ceiling. He can not replace Syndergaard in terms of dominance but the gap might not be huge in terms contributing to wins and losses.
Betances will be very familiar to New Yorker having spent all of his career to date with the Yankees. If he is right the Mets bullpen gets a huge bump but that is not a slam dunk coming into the season.
Key Losses:
- Zack Wheeler, SP
- Todd Frazier, 3B
Losing Wheeler hurts. He and Matt Harvey were supposed to leave the Mets to some titles and it never happened. Like Harvey Wheeler had his own struggles with staying healthy. Worst of all he signed with the rival Phillies. Frazier was a bust with the Mets, never showing the kind of power production he did with the Reds earlier in his career.
2020 New York Mets Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- Brandon Nimmo, OF
- Jeff McNeil, 3B
- Pete Alonso, 1B
- Robinson Cano, 2B
- J.D. Davis, OF
- Michael Conforto, OF
- Wilson Ramos, C
- Amed Rosario, SS
Alonso and McNeil were the stars of the offense last season. Cano is a huge question mark, but at least he has a track record of success. They need him so that pitchers will be forces to pitch to Alonso a little more.
The bottom half of the lineup Michael Conforto hit 33 home runs last year, though in obscurity thanks to Alonso. That is good production but perhaps he has another gear. He is only 27, as is Nimmo, so there could be more there.
2020 New York Mets Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- Jacob deGrom
- Marcus Stroman
- Rick Porcello
- Steven Matz
- Michael Wacha
deGrom is awesome. He has back to back Cy Young awards though he was much better in 2018 than 2019. There is no reason to think he can’t keep it up either.
I thought Marcus Stroman would be a very good fit in NY but his overall numbers were not great after his trade. He is a ground ball pitcher and the Mets are not a great fielding team so maybe I am wrong.
I am not a Porcello guy but he has been a winner. His stuff is not great but getting out of the AL East and in the National League probably helps. Wacha was supposed to be depth only but per the above I think he can be a useful piece.
2020 New York Mets Predictions: Projected Closer:
- Edwin Diaz
Diaz did not have a good first season in Queens. 99 strikeouts in 58 innings showed that the dominance was still there but he has less than half of the saves he had his final season in Seattle and his ERA was almost triple. Betances might be able to help out some, if he is right.
The back end of the bullpen could be a strength and they have arms that can work pretty deep into games.
2020 New York Mets Predictions: 84 Wins and third in the NL East (Bet Now at any of our reviewed MLB Sportsbooks!)
New York looks pretty good even though Thor is out for the season, whenever it starts. They won 86 games and missed the playoffs last season but I am not seeing getting above that relative threshold.
I think you have to think that Alonso cools some this season as few players hit that may homers in back to back seasons. If that is the case someone has to pick things up…it would be great if Cano could be that guy.
deGrom and Stroman are a pretty good 1/2 punch. Not as good as the Nats have but I expect both to continue their recent levels of performance. I like Matz and Wacha more than I like Porcello but there is some personal bias there.
The bullpen will be key to being better than a year ago. If you are going to compete you can’t squander games at the back end. Guys have to do their jobs. Diaz as shaky and Betances is a question mark right now. New York has some great swing men but they need their shutdown guys to perform.
New York does not look as good on paper as Washington and Atlanta and it is tough if you are third-best team in your division these days. Not having Syndergaard might hurt them more in a playoff scenario than during the regular season. This is an interesting group.
