MLB Marlins Predictions & Handicapping Insight
Marlins skipper Don Mattingly begins his fourth season in South Beach tasked with imparting his considerable baseball knowledge to a raw nucleus that has underperformed in the eyes of many.
Along the way, veterans Martin Prado and new addition Curtis Granderson will also add their leadership to one of Major League Baseball’s least experienced rosters.

Key Additions:
- Sergio Romo
- Curtis Granderson
- Neil Walker
As expected, the Marlins had a budget offseason. Miami’s biggest acquisition this winter is faded three-time All Star Curtis Granderson. Granderson, now 38, has succumbed to injuries that have placed his overall numbers in decline since the 2017 season.
A former NL RBI leader, Granderson, appeared in just 19 games last season with Milwaukee, logging 41 at bats.

Three time world champion and former All Star Sergio Romo brings proven middle relief aid. Last season, Romo set career-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts —though the 35-year-old also surrendered his highest home run and earned runs totals during a solid eleven-year MLB career.
Romo’s presence, like Granderson and Prado, will be felt most by how he demonstrates the finer points of accrued everyday major league service to the Marlins’ youngsters.
Versatile infielder Neil Walker rounds out Miami’s frugal offseason haul. Walker, 32, put together several quality seasons before batting a career-worst .211 with NYY in 2019.
Key Losses:
- C J.T. Realmuto
- SP Dan Straily
2018 All Star J.T. Realmuto’s winter departure robs another capable bat from Miami’s tentative lineup. Realmuto, 27, was traded on Dec. 7 to division-rival Philadelphia. Last season, Realmuto paced Miami in home runs, RBI’s, and slugging percentage. His loss demonstrates how deep the Marlins’ current rebuild has sunk.
Miami released Dan Straily’s capable arm just before opening day. In a move to free up more prospect innings, Straily -career 42-36 record- now sits among MLB’s free-agency pool.
Obviously, Miami’s intention is to get younger while signing budget-priced veteran guidance.
2019 Miami Marlins Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- LF Curtis Granderson
- 3B Brian Anderson
- 1B Neil Walker
- 2B Starlin Castro
- RF Garrett Cooper
- CF Lewis Brinson
- SS J.T. Riddle
- C Jorge Alfaro
Starlin Castro and Brian Anderson lead this year’s Marlins cast which should struggle in all major statistical categories.

And while those struggles are near-inevitable, nonetheless, it should be intriguing to see which Miami prospects rise and become true, everyday major league contributors.
Also, there is plenty of intrigue surrounding what Curtis Granderson has left. If Granderson bounces back to serviceable, he could prove valuable on the late-season trading bloc.
In a season of learning, expect many variations and experiments with Miami’s 2019 lineup.
2019 Miami Marlins Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- RHP Jose Urena
- LHP Wei-Yen Chen
- RHP Trevor Richards
- RHP Pablo Lopez
Each sporting a sub. 500 record from 2018’s purposed regression, Jose Urea and lefty Wei-Yen Chen headline the Marlins’ stopgap starting rotation.
Also, though he isn’t listed above, keep an eye on 22-year-old prospect Sandy Alcantara. In limited innings last season with St. Louis, Alcantara impressed scouts by throwing hard while striking out 30 batters in 33 innings.
Alcantara and Urena are seen as potential risers on this young Marlins staff.
2019 Miami Marlins Predictions: Projected Closer:
- RHP Drew Steckenrider
After compiling a 4-4 record and 3.9 ERA last season in middle relief, Steckenrider, 27, gets his chance to shine for Miami this season.

Though save opportunities will be few and far between for Steckenrider, the third-year prospect will log innings and perhaps find himself as an MLB player.
2019 Miami Marlins Predictions:
Rostering young, bargain basement pieces, Miami is currently a consensus bottom-three MLB team.
And while it’s difficult to avoid that low-bar forecast from oddsmakers and pundits, as touched on throughout, this Miami iteration’s narrative centers around finding potential gems in the rough of a coalmine gathering.
While Miami will struggle to win more than 65-68 games this year, Don Mattingly’s guiding eye will produce the best possible version from —and perhaps a future star or two— this Marlins collection.
