*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Thursday, March 16th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Friday, March 17th.
Memphis Grizzlies
The big news for the Grizzlies this week is Ja Morant will be back this season. Adam Silver handed down an eight-game suspension (with the prior six games he’s missed counting toward that total).
But since Morant hasn’t been active while he’s been away it could actually be longer than that before he returns. Technically, Morant could play as soon as Monday, March 20th versus the Mavericks.
Stats
Meanwhile, offensively, the Grizzlies score 115.7 points per game ranked 10th overall. Memphis shoot 46.9% from the field ranking 19th, and 34.4% from the perimeter ranking 25th.
Memphis still owns the best opponent field goal percentage of 45% while limiting opponents to 111.9 points per game and 35.3% ranking fifth and ninth respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Steven Adams C (OUT indefinitely —PCL strain)
- Brandon Clarke PF (OUT for season—torn Achilles)
- Jake LaRavia (questionable —back)
- Ja Morant (OUT —suspension -eligible to return 3/20/23)
- Vince Williams Jr. (questionable —right shoulder soreness)
San Antonio Spurs
Watching the end of the Spurs-Mavericks game was a bit of a rollercoaster with all the ebbs and flows. With 1.1 seconds on the clock and trailing by two, Keldon Johnson missed his first throw, then came no where near his intentional miss on the second.
But, the basketball gods smiled on the Spurs as the Mavs turned the ball over on the inbound play followed by the Spurs tossing up an inbound lofted lob for the dunk to tie the game at the end of regulation.
And that was just in the final few plays of regulation. Unfortunately, the Spurs seemed to use all their energy up to force overtime as they were AWOL in the extra frame.
Stats
On offense, the Spurs average 112.5 points per game ranking 24th overall. So far, San Antonio shoots 46.8% from the field and 34.5% from the perimeter ranking 21st and 24th respectively.
On the negative side, while the Spurs struggle to score the larger issue lies on the defensive side of the hardware with them ranking 30th in all three defensive categories allowing 122.1 opponent points per game 50.5% field goal percentage, and 39.4% perimeter percentage.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Khem Birch PF (OUT — knee)
- Keita Bates-Diop, SF (probable—Achilles)
- Charles Bassey, C (OUT for season—knee)

Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Prediction:
Kudos to Taylor Jenkins for keeping his squad focused on competing despite all the drama, injuries, and uncertainty of their direction the past few weeks. They’ve struggled on the road, but that began with the loss of Steven Adams.
Meanwhile, the Spurs are 4-4 through the last eight games playing with more confidence of late which is why I’m taking the points.
