Here’s why I’m backing an UNDER bet below in my Capitals Hurricanes free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Capitals vs. Hurricanes Gameday
The Washington Capitals open their 2026-27 season Friday night against the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes at Lenovo Center. Spencer Carbery’s Capitals are making their season debut, while Rod Brind’Amour’s Hurricanes enter at 0-0-1.
Puck drop is set for 7 PM ET. Washington added Alex Tuch, Jordan Kyrou and Boone Jenner during an aggressive offseason, giving Carbery more scoring depth around Alex Ovechkin and the returning core.
Carolina changed considerably less after winning the Stanley Cup.
The champs kept most of the band together. Washington spent the summer shopping for upgrades.
The Hurricanes opened Tuesday with a 1-0 overtime loss to Florida. Washington, meanwhile, starts with a road back-to-back against Carolina and Tampa Bay, so apparently the schedule makers weren’t interested in a soft launch.

Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make Carolina the home favorite at -145, while Washington is +123 on the moneyline. The Hurricanes are -1.5 at +171 on the puck line, with the total set at 6.5.
Carolina’s opener offered considerably more defense than fireworks. The Hurricanes and Panthers went nearly 65 minutes without a goal before Gustav Forsling scored with 4.3 seconds remaining in overtime.
Carolina managed only 15 shots and went 0-for-6 on the power play.
Washington has no regular-season result yet, making its preseason numbers less useful than the lineup Carbery actually brings into Raleigh. These Metropolitan Division rivals know each other well, and Carolina’s pressure system gives the Capitals’ rebuilt roster an immediate test.

Hurricanes Stats
Carolina returns most of the roster that went 53-22-7, won the Metropolitan Division and eventually lifted the Stanley Cup.
The Hurricanes remain built around pressure and puck possession. Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake give Brind’Amour scoring options, while Jaccob Slavin remains the defensive anchor.
Seth Jarvis is the notable absence after undergoing shoulder surgery during the offseason. He led Carolina with 32 goals last season, leaving some significant offense to replace.
The penalty kill certainly looked ready Tuesday.
Carolina erased all seven Florida power plays and blocked 19 shots. The Hurricanes didn’t generate enough offense at the other end, but this is still a team perfectly comfortable winning games without turning them into track meets.
Carolina can make ugly hockey productive, which isn’t glamorous but still counts in the standings.
Capitals Stats
Washington finished 43-30-9 last season and missed the playoffs, prompting a significant offseason makeover.
Tuch and Kyrou are both proven 30-goal scorers, while Jenner adds experience and versatility. Ovechkin returns for his 22nd NHL season after dealing with a lower-body injury during training camp, but he returned to full practice and is expected to play Friday.
The blue line also looks different.
Rasmus Sandin is recovering from ACL surgery and begins the season unavailable. Jakob Chychrun, who led NHL defensemen with 26 goals last season, becomes even more important with Washington working through those changes.
The Capitals have more offensive options than they did a year ago.
Now comes the mildly inconvenient part: figuring out how all the new pieces fit against the defending champions.
Capitals vs. Hurricanes Goalie Matchup
Carolina enters the season with Brandon Bussi and Pyotr Kochetkov after Frederik Andersen departed for Edmonton.
Bussi stopped 19 shots in Tuesday’s opener before Florida finally beat him in overtime. Kochetkov occupied the expected starter’s crease at Thursday’s practice, putting him in position to potentially make his season debut Friday without making that assignment official.

Washington brings back Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren.
Thompson went 31-21-6 with a 2.44 GAA and .912 save percentage last season, earning NHL Second All-Star Team honors. He gives Washington a proven option behind a defense adjusting to some significant personnel changes.
With the Capitals playing again Saturday, Carbery also has an immediate back-to-back to manage in net.
Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes bottom line: Carolina’s established pressure system gets the first crack at a deeper Washington lineup still putting its new pieces together.
Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Betting Trends
- The Hurricanes have lost their last game against the Panthers by 1 goal.
- Additionally, Carolina recorded 0 goals in their last game, despite having 15 shots on goal.
- Washington won their last three preseason games, scoring at least 3 goals in each.
- Also, the Capitals secured a victory by 4 goals against the Flyers in their most recent game.
- Washington has achieved 6 power play goals in their last three games.
- The Capitals have allowed only 5 goals in their last three games.
Capitals Hurricanes Free Pick: Under 6.5
Here is my Capitals Hurricanes free pick: I’m betting Under 6.5. Carolina showed immediately that it can turn a game into a 60-minute wrestling match, and Washington gets that assignment before its rebuilt forward group has played a regular-season shift together.
The Capitals certainly added scoring talent, but Carolina’s pressure can make talented teams spend a lot of time simply trying to exit their own zone cleanly. If the Hurricanes dictate where this game is played, Washington’s new weapons may have to work harder than usual to find open ice.
Carolina doesn’t need this game to be pretty, and my Under ticket would prefer that it isn’t.
Jarvis being unavailable also removes one of Carolina’s best finishers, while Thompson gives Washington the kind of goaltending capable of keeping this from getting loose.
I see a better path to long possessions, contested chances and a manageable score than an end-to-end track meet.
I don’t need another Carolina game that requires a search party to find a goal.
Give me disciplined five-on-five hockey, competent goaltending and fewer special-teams fireworks than opportunities, and we’re in business. I’m betting Under 6.5.
