Here’s why I’m backing a New York ML bet below in my Rangers Red Wings free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Rangers vs. Red Wings Gameday
The New York Rangers head to Little Caesars Arena Friday night for an Original Six matchup with the Detroit Red Wings. Mike Sullivan’s Rangers are 1-1-0, while Todd McLellan’s Red Wings are making their 2026-27 regular-season debut.
Puck drop is set for 6:30 PM ET on TNT, truTV and HBO Max.
New York arrives less than 24 hours after beating Tampa Bay 5-1 at Madison Square Garden. It was an emphatic response after the Rangers were shut out 3-0 in Boston on Opening Night.
Detroit has been waiting considerably longer for a game that counts.
The Rangers already shook off Opening Night rust. Detroit gets to find out Friday whether theirs came with assembly instructions.
The Red Wings begin their 101st NHL season with four consecutive home games and will play seven of their first eight at Little Caesars Arena. That’s a favorable opening stretch for a club trying to end a 10-year playoff drought.
New York gets the opposite scheduling experience.
Friday is the Rangers’ third game in four nights and the second half of a back-to-back. Sullivan gets an immediate look at how his reworked roster handles travel and a quick turnaround after an emotional home opener.

New York Rangers vs. Detroit Red Wings Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make Detroit a modest home favorite. The Red Wings are -131 on the moneyline, while New York is +111.
The Rangers are +1.5 at -234 on the puck line, with Detroit -1.5 at +191.
The opening total is 5.5.
New York’s first two games couldn’t have looked much different. The Rangers were blanked in Boston before scoring twice in the opening period against Tampa Bay and controlling the rest of the night.
Thursday also produced a little franchise history.
Igor Shesterkin fired the puck into an empty net to become the first Rangers goalie ever to score a goal. Apparently stopping them wasn’t enough to keep him entertained.
Last season’s series was split.
Detroit won 2-1 at Madison Square Garden in November, while New York answered with a 4-1 victory in April. Gabe Perreault scored his first NHL hat trick in the Rangers’ win.

Red Wings Stats
Detroit enters the season trying to generate more offense at five-on-five.
The Red Wings averaged 2.91 goals per game last season and finished 30th in the NHL in five-on-five goals. A late collapse was costly after Detroit had put itself in excellent position earlier in the year.
The Wings went 9-14-5 after Feb. 3 and missed the playoffs for a 10th consecutive season.
Alex DeBrincat remains the most dangerous finisher.
He scored 41 goals and finished with a career-high 85 points last season. Lucas Raymond supplied 51 assists, giving Detroit two proven offensive threats at the top of the lineup.
The problem Friday is who’s missing between them.
Dylan Larkin will sit out Detroit’s first two games with an upper-body injury. Losing the No. 1 center and a 34-goal scorer before Game 1 isn’t exactly how McLellan drew up the opening lineup card.
Viktor Arvidsson was added during the offseason after recording 54 points with Boston. Keegan Kolesar also joins the forward group and gives Detroit another physical presence.
There is plenty to like on the blue line.
Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson anchor the top pair, while Justin Faulk adds another veteran puck mover. Seider blocked 180 shots last season, fourth-most in the NHL.
Detroit has enough weapons to survive some adversity, although voluntarily testing that theory on Opening Night seems ambitious.
The Red Wings don’t need someone to impersonate Larkin Friday.
They need the remaining centers to handle their assignments, DeBrincat and Raymond to create offense, and the defense to prevent New York from turning turnovers into quick transition chances.
Rangers Stats
New York’s revamped lineup gave Sullivan a much better look Thursday.
Eight Rangers recorded at least one point against Tampa Bay, with several offseason additions immediately getting involved. That’s encouraging for a club that entered camp needing to replace significant scoring and establish new combinations quickly.
Pavel Dorofeyev scored his first goal as a Ranger and added an assist.
He led Vegas with 37 goals last season before New York acquired him in June. His finishing ability gives the Rangers another shooter capable of converting chances without needing to dominate the puck.
Mika Zibanejad also finished with a goal and an assist Thursday.
Oliver Bjorkstrand helped set up Dorofeyev’s goal, while Eeli Tolvanen scored his first for New York. Those contributions matter because Sullivan needs production to extend beyond the familiar names.
Adam Fox remains the organizer from the blue line.
He recorded two assists against Tampa Bay and continues to give New York an elite puck mover capable of starting offense before opposing defenses get organized.
The Rangers were also perfect on seven penalty kills Thursday.
That’s the kind of detail that travels better than a five-goal outburst, especially on the second night of a back-to-back when New York may not have the legs to spend all evening trading rush chances.
Rangers vs. Red Wings Goalie Matchup
Igor Shesterkin remains the foundation in New York’s crease.
He stopped 24 of 25 shots against Tampa Bay after starting Tuesday’s opener in Boston. New York has leaned on him heavily for years, but asking for another start less than 24 hours later would obviously be a different workload decision.
The Rangers’ goalie depth is already being tested.
Joonas Korpisalo is on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, leaving Dylan Garand as the other available option. That makes New York’s Friday starter worth watching rather than automatically penciling Shesterkin into the crease.

Detroit enters the season with John Gibson and Daniil Tarasov.
Gibson went 29-22-4 with a 2.72 GAA and .901 save percentage last season, including four shutouts. He gives McLellan an experienced option at the top of the tandem.
Tarasov finished 13-15-3 with a 3.05 GAA and .895 save percentage.
Detroit has two rested goalies available for its opener, while Sullivan has a legitimate decision to make after using Shesterkin Thursday.
That uncertainty doesn’t need to be exaggerated.
If Shesterkin returns, New York has the higher-end option. If Garand gets the call, the Rangers will need their skaters to provide considerably more protection in front of him.
New York Rangers vs. Detroit Red Wings bottom line: Detroit opens without its top center, while New York’s biggest question is whether a demanding early schedule begins to show up in the Rangers’ legs.
New York Rangers vs. Detroit Red Wings Hockey Betting Trends
- Detroit went 2-2 straight-up in their last four preseason games.
- Also, New York recorded a 1-1 straight-up record in their first two regular season games.
- Detroit scored 12 goals in their last four preseason games, averaging 3 goals per game.
- The Rangers allowed 4 goals in their first two regular season games, averaging 2 goals against per game.

Rangers Red Wings Free Pick: New York Rangers ML +111
Here is my Rangers Red Wings free pick: I’m taking New York Rangers ML +111. Detroit gets home ice and fresh legs, but laying a price without Dylan Larkin doesn’t interest me. Remove your No. 1 center from Opening Night and suddenly that little plus sign beside New York becomes considerably more attractive.
The Rangers have enough finishing talent to make Detroit pay for mistakes. Dorofeyev gives Sullivan another legitimate scorer, while Zibanejad, Miller and Fox don’t need much help turning a bad change or loose puck into trouble.
Detroit gets Opening Night at home, but apparently its best center was not included in the festivities.
I also prefer New York’s path if this becomes a tight third-period game. The Rangers don’t need to dominate possession or reproduce Thursday’s offensive outburst. They need competent goaltending, responsible puck management and enough skill to exploit a Detroit lineup missing its most important center.
The back-to-back is the obvious concern, which is why I want the plus price rather than laying anything with New York. At +111, I’ll take the more dangerous offensive lineup against a short-handed Detroit group and make the Red Wings prove they can replace Larkin immediately. Give me the New York Rangers ML +111.
