2026 Whitney Stakes Handicapping
What is shaping up to be the race of the year so far will take centre stage at Saratoga on Saturday when they go to the gate for the 98th running of the (G1) Whitney Stakes.
The Whitney is open to horses age three and older, and they’ll run 1 1/8 miles on the Saratoga dirt track. This year’s field includes seven colts and horses and one filly, who between them have 13 Grade 1 stakes victories.
The winner of the Whitney receives an automatic entry to the Breeders’ Cup Classic in the fall.
Among other things, the Whitney Stakes is known for having produced one of the big racing upsets of all time when a horse named Onion beat the great Triple Crown winner Secretariat.

2026 Whitney Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Magnitude Race Odds: 9-5
Magnitude has been unbeatable this season, winning four straight races. The last two of those have been at the Grade 1 level, including a win in the Dubai World Cup over Forever Young, considered by many the best dirt horse in the world.
Last out he won the (G1) Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs, defeating Baeza, Sovereignty and White Abarrio, all of whom he will meet again here.
2026 Whitney Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Sovereignty Race Odds: 3-1
Last year’s Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of The Year, Sovereignty is still looking for his first win as a four year old, having run second to White Abarrio in his season debut in the Oaklawn Handicap, and then third last out in the Stephen Foster.
He’s made four starts at Saratoga and won three of them, although he only has one win in four starts – with two seconds and a third – at this 1 1/8 miles distance.
Baeza Race Odds: 7-2
Eleven months ago Baeza beat Magnitude in the (G1) Pennsylvania Derby, and as mentioned above was second to that one by 1 1/4 lengths last out in in the Stephen Foster.
He’s a very consistent runner, having finished in the money in nine of 11 lifetime starts, and has been going up against all the best in his cohort over the past couple seasons. But he only has two wins in those 11 races, and is 0-for-2 at Saratoga.
Nitrogen Race Odds: 4-1
Speaking of consistency, Nitrogen has never been off the board in her 16 lifetime races, winning exactly half of those. She was a force last out in winning the (G1) Ogden Phipps Stakes by 12 lengths, a race where the third-place finisher came back to win next time out.
She’s also 2-for-2 on the Saratoga dirt track, while also having a win on the turf. Here she’ll be taking on males for the first time.
Here’s My 2026 Whitney Stakes Free Pick
There’s no question Magnitude is the one to beat here based on his recent form alone. In addition, the race just might be set up to go his way, as he’s also the fastest horse early and draws the rail. If he gets loose on the lead, it could all be over by the time they hit the quarter-pole.
However, Saratoga has seen many big favourites come up short (repeat, Onion beat Secretariat) and at low odds I’m going to try to beat him. The thinking is that trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has a second entry in Forged Steel (20-1) whose sole purpose is to push the pace to set up a late run by his main contender, White Abarrio.
There’s also a good chance Nitrogen will be close early, so I’m hoping Magnitude doesn’t get away with an easy lead and someone can come from off the pace and catch him.
I was a big fan of Sovereignty last season and he rewarded me with a 7-1 win in the Kentucky Derby, so I’m going to show some faith and pick him to win.
He needs to step up and show he’s as good at four as he was at three. But if he gets a pace to run into he has a very strong finishing kick on a track he likes. And this will be the first time in his last four starts where he won’t be the favourite, and so offers a bit of value.
