2026 Rebel Stakes Handicapping
Sunday Stakes action down south in Arkansas features a big one, as Oaklawn plays host to the (G2) Rebel Stakes. Along with the huge $1 million purse, the Rebel offers Kentucky Derby qualifying points on a 50-25-15-10-5 scale.
While recent winners of the Rebel haven’t gone on to make much noise on the Triple Crown trail, the 2015 race winner became a superstar. American Pharoah won that year and then went on to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.
Originally entered to run in this race, Bravaro will scratch and run in the (G2) Fountain Of Youth Stakes on Saturday instead. With that defection, the Rebel is expected to draw a field of nine three-year-old colts.

2026 Rebel Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Blackout Time Race Odds: 8-5
No worse than second in three lifetie starts, Blackout Time was much the best two back in breaking his maiden by 9 3/4 lengths racing one mile at Ellis Park back in August.
Following that effort he stepped up to Grade 1 company and ran a respectable second in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland. There he finished just 2 3/4 lengths behind Ted Noffey, last year’s two-year-old champion.
This will be his first start since that race in October, but he’s been putting in some good works leading up to this.
2026 Rebel Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Litmus Test Odds: 7-2
The California-based Litmus Test ships in off a win in the (G2) Los Alamitos Futurity, his fourth consecutive graded-stakes start since he broke his maiden last August.
He’s been putting up consistently strong Brisnet speed figures in all of his races, hitting the 90+ mark everytime, and two back scoring a 102 while running a close-up fourth in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He’s the only horse in the race with a triple-digit figure
Silent Tactic Race Odds: 9-2
After starting his career with a win and runner-up finisih on the all-weather track at Woodbine, Silent Tactic relocated to Oaklawn for his last two.
He was second while making up ground late in the Smarty Jones Stakes behind very slow fractions, and then took the win last out in the (G3) Southwest Stakes. He again came from way off the pace to get to the wire first, besting several he’ll meet again here.
Strategic Risk Race Odds: 12-1
The winner of the Smarty Jones back in early January, Strategic Risk was a complete no-show last out in the Southwest, failing to sustain a bid on the clubhouse turn and fading badly in the stretch to finish 10th in the 12-horse field.
Due to poor weather he had missed a number of workouts prior to that race and may not have been in top condition. He’s the most experienced runner in the field, with three wins and a third in seven lifetime starts.

Without taking anything away from the favourites in this race, I think it’s much more wide-open than the morning line odds would indicate.
In addition to the horses listed above, the lightly raced Class President (10-1) and the improving Rancho Santa Fe (12-1) are in with a shot, if not to win then to at least pick up some Derby qualifying points.
I was big on Strategic Risk going into the Southwest. and like many others left to wonder what went wrong. I’ll take the trainer’s word that lack of training leading up to the race was the culprit, and I’ll give him one more chance here to prove he’s a Derby-worthy horse.
I’ll swing a bit for the fences and take him to win.
While there’s not a lot of early speed here to close into, Silent Tactic always seems to find a way to get inot the race late, and I’ll use him in the exacta.
