2026 Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results and Review
Horse racing gamblers are you looking for 2026 Kentucky Derby handicapping tips? Need some advice on who to take? The 2026 (G1) Kentucky Derby is set for May 2 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY. Here’s a review of the major prep races leading up to the Derby.
Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results
Qualifying to make the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby can basically be divided into two categories, BPS – Before the Points System, and APS – After the Points System.
Prior to 2013, horses qualified for the Derby based on money earned in graded stakes races. Starting in 2013, a points system was introduced whereby horses were required to run in certain designated races where they would earn points based on their finishing position in that race.
The series of races starts in September and runs until mid-April, at which time the top 20 horses by points qualify for the Derby.
The points awarded increase as the series goes along, with the final few races awarding the most points. These final races are typically considered to be the major prep races, as a win or even second-place finish essentially guarantees a horse gets a spot in the Derby gate.
Analyzing the results of these key prep races is a major aspect of handicapping for the Derby. In the 13 years since the introduction of the points system, 12 Derby winners have run in one of four major prep races.
Those races are the Florida Derby (5 winners), the Arkansas Derby (3 winners), the Santa Anita Derby (3 winners) and the Louisiana Derby (1 winner). The exception was in 2022, when Rich Strike ran third in his final prep in the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park, and then shocked the world by winning the Kentucky Derby at odds of 80-1.
It’s interesting to note that during the first six years of the points system, every Derby winner had also won its final prep (although 2018 winner Justify won his final prep but was DQd for interference). In the seven years since, no Derby winner won its final prep, although six of the seven finished 2nd or 3rd.
In 2019, Maximum Security won his final prep and crossed the Derby finish line first, but was DQd for interference at the top of the stretch.
Here’s a look at the results of the major prep races leading up to the 2026 Kentucky Derby. Note that all of these races are run at 1 1/8 miles – 1/8 of a mile shorter than the Derby – with the exception of the Louisiana Derby which is run at 1 3/16 miles.

Florida Derby
In the points era, five horses that finished in the top three in the Florida Derby went on to win the Kentucky Derby. Maximum Security also won the Florida Derby, but as noted above was DQd from his Kentucky Derby win.
The 2026 Florida Derby was run at Gulfstream Park on March 28 over a track rated as fast. After scratches the race included six starters. Despite the small field, the Florida Derby was arguably the most competitive of the major preps. Three of the six starters had previously won a graded-stakes race, one other was graded-stakes placed, and one other had won a lower-level stakes race.
Commandment won the race by a nose over The Puma, with Chief Wallabee finishing third. All three of these horses are expected to run in the Derby. For the win, Commandment earned a 97 Equibase speed figure.
Based on the timing splits, the race was relatively slow to develop with a time of 48:80 to the half-mile, 1:13 to the six-furlong mark, and with the final 1/8 of a mile run in a solid 12:67. Commandment and The Puma both raced at the back of the pack early, with Chief Wallabee sitting 3rd/4th. The Puma made a move mid-way on the final turn and took a brief lead in late stretch in a battle with Chief Wallabee and one other. Commandment swung wide off the turn and got up to nip The Puma at the wire.
Analysis: In a solid race by all three contenders Commandment gets credit for going the widest and being able to close into the pace for the win, although it was very close. Both Commandment and Chief Wallabee galloped out ahead of The Puma after the wire, which is something to consider for the longer distance of the Kentucky Derby. The early pace of the Derby will likely be much faster than we saw here, and of course the field will be much larger.

Arkansas Derby
In the points era, three horses that finished in the top three in the Arkansas Derby have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby.
The 2026 Arkansas Derby was run on March 28 at Oaklawn Park on a track rated as fast. After one scratch the race included eight starters. Two horses had a previous graded-stakes win as well as both being graded-stakes placed twice. One other was graded-stakes placed and also had a lower level stakes win.
Renagade won the race by four lengths over Silent Tactic with Taptastic running third. Renegade and Silent Tactic are both expected to run in the Derby.
The race had a moderate early pace, with a time of 47:80 to the half-mile, 1:12.52 to the six furlong mark, but with a final 1/8 mile in a fast 11:84. Renegade was seventh early with Silent Tactic just in front of him. Midway on the backstretch Renegade started to move up a bit but had to check slightly and fell to last. Into the far turn Silent Tactic began a strong move through the field and Renegade followed.
Silent Tactic took over the lead at the top of the stretch with Renegade four lengths behind. At mid stretch Renegade quickened significantly to go by Silent Tactic and on for the win.
For the win Renegade earned a 107 Equibase speed figure.
Analysis: Renegade showed very good acceleration in the stretch and went by a graded-stakes winner in Silent Tactic fairly easily. while the rest of the field was no match. For his part, Silent Tactic made his move to the lead perhaps a bit earlier than is typically his style.

Louisiana Derby
In the 13 years of the points series, only one Louisiana Derby runner has gone on to win the Kentucky Derby, that being Mandoulin who was sixth in the 2021 LA Derby, and then won at Churchill due to an after-the-fact DQ to Medina Spirit.
The 2o26 Louisiana Derby was run on March 21 at the Fair Grounds Race Course on a track rated as fast. There were no scratches and nine starters. Only one horse in the LA Derby had a previous graded-stakes win and was also previously graded-stakes placed. Four other horses were also graded-stakes placed, with two of those winning lower level stakes.
Emerging Market won the race by a head over Pavlovian, with Golden Tempo running third. All three of those, plus 5th-place finisher Chip Honcho are expected to run in the Kentucky Derby.
The race had a fast early pace as they went 46.23 to the half-mile, and 1:10:85 to the six furlongs, but slowed considerably after that. Pavlovian set the pace and was still in front as they hit the top of the stretch with Emerging Market moving from fifth to range up on his outside. Those two then battled to the wire with Emerging Market coming out on top getting a 96 Equibase speed figure.
Golden Tempo was squeezed at the break and was last early, made his way through the field in the stretch and was running hard on the rail at the end.
Analysis: This race featured the kind of early pace we’re most likely to see at the Kentucky Derby, and credit goes to Pavlovian for setting that pace and still having enough left to battle at the end, despite coming up just short. Emerging Market benefitted from a very clean trip, but with only one previous race to his name showed maturity in prevailing in the stretch battle.

Santa Anita Derby
In the past 13 years of the points system, three horses that have finished in the top three in the Santa Anita Derby have won the Kentucky Derby, plus Justify who won the 2018 SA Derby but was DQd to seventh. However, 2021 SA Derby winner Medina Spirit was later DQd from his Kentucky Derby win due to a medication violation.
The 2026 Santa Anita Derby was run on April 4 at Santa Anita Race Course over a track rated fast. There were no scratches and seven starters. Three of the seven runners had a previous graded-stakes wins, with two of those also graded-stakes placed. One other was also graded-stakes placed, and one had a lower-level stakes win.
So Happy won the race by 2 3/4 lengths over Potente, who was a further 6 3/4 lengths ahead of third-place Vitruvian Man. Both of the first two finishers are expected to run in the 2026 Kentucky Derby, as well as fourth-place finisher Intrepido.
The race had a solid early pace as they went 46.79 to the half-mile mark and 1:11.11 for six furlongs. The winner ran the last 1/8 of a mile in 12.85.
Potente went to the lead into the first turn and maintained that position under pressure while So Happy had a perfect position in the clear in third down the backstretch. The two were head-to-head as they came off the turn with So Happy taking over in deep stretch and going on to win while Potente tired late.
Analysis: Similar to Pavolvian in the LA Derby, Potente did the heavy lifting by setting the pace for most of the race, but unlike that one he seemed to have little left in deep stretch and may have hit his distance limit. So Happy showed enough speed early to get the stalking trip everyone wants in the Derby.

Blue Grass Stakes
The Blue Grass stakes hasn’t produced a Kentucky Derby winner since 1991, although Sierra Leone won in 2024 before losing the Derby lost by a slim nose.
The 2026 Blue Grass Stakes was run on April 4 at Keeneland Race Course on a track rated as fast. There were two scratches and seven starters. Favourite Further Ado was the only runner with a previous Grade 1 stakes win, and there were a couple lower level stakes winners in the field.
Further Ado won the race by 11 lengths over Ottinho with Talkin’ another 2 3/4 lengths back in third. The pace was honest as they went 47.71 for the half mile and 1:11. 80 for six furlongs. The final 1/8th was a pedestrian 12.95 but the winner wasn’t being pushed with an 11-length lead.
Of the Blue Grass runners, only Further Ado is expected to start in the Kentucky Derby.
Further Ado sat off the pace in third down the backstretch while racing 3 to 4 paths wide. He continued a wide move around the far turn while passing the two leading horses, gained the lead at the top of the stretch and continued to the wire unchallenged. He earned a 107 Equibase speed figure for the race.
Analysis: It was an impressive performance by the winner albeit against an overmatched field. The pace was solid enough for a Derby prep, and he showed good speed early to get a stalking position and won easily despite a wide trip throughout.

Wood Memorial Stakes
The Wood Memorial hasn’t produced a Kentucky Derby winner since Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000.
The 2026 Wood Memorial was run on April 4 at Aqueduct race track over a dirt course rated as fast. With one scratch there were 12 starters, the largest field of all the major preps. Two of the runners had a previous graded-stakes win, two others were graded-stakes placed and four had a previous lower-level stakes win.
Albus won the race by 1 1/4 lengths over Right To Party with Ocelli a nose back in third. All three top finishers were double-digit long shots. The early pace was quick and they went 47.30 for the first half mile, but slowed to 1:12.04 for six furlongs, and ran a very slow 13:30 for the last 1/8 mile. Albus earned an 89 Equibase speed figure for the race.
The top two finishers are both expected to be in the Derby starting gate.
Albus broke near the back of the field and stayed with the second flight in eighth place while down on the rail as they raced on the backstretch. He came off the rail and started to move through traffic coming off the turn and found a seam to get to the lead in mid-stretch. All of the early leaders faded in the stretch and were passed by late runners.
Analysis: With none of the favourites coming close to the win, the early pace completely falling apart, and the slow finishing time, the Wood can probably be regarded as the weakest of the major preps. While Albus ran a decent enough race to get the win, all three of those factors are unlikely to be replicated in the Kentucky Derby.

Final Analysis
It should be noted that the split times listed above are raw numbers and don’t account for track bias. While all tracks were listed as fast, Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park and Santa Anita are generally regarded as “speed favouring” courses that tend to help front-runners and typically produce faster times.
Not reviewed above are the Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs and the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park, both of which are major preps points-wise, but come with a caveat. Although the Virginia Derby is run at the same 1 1/8 miles as all the other preps, it’s only run around one turn, which can be a significant factor in racing. The 1 1/4 mile Kentucky Derby is run around two turns.
Incredibolt won the Virginia Derby over nine others by 4 lengths and will be in the Kentucky Derby field.
The Jeff Ruby is run on an all-weather track at Turfway, rather than dirt. There were 12 starters, and favoured Fulleffort won by 2 1/2 lengths after rallying from the back of the pack and sweeping into contention as they came off the turn. He will be in the Derby field.
