2026 Holy Bull Stakes Handicapping
A full slate of 2026 Kentucky Derby qualifying races are on the track this Saturday, including the (G3) Holy Bull Stakes from Gulfstream Park.
The Holy Bull awards Derby qualifying points on a 20-10-6-4-2 scale to the top five finishers. The race is open to horses age three, and is run at 1 1/16 miles on the Gulfstream Park dirt track.
The Florida prep races have always been an important steppingstone on the Triple Crown trail and seven of the past 10 winners of the Holy Bull have gone on to qualify for the Derby. The best recent results have come from 2020 winner Tiz The Law, who finished second in the Derby that year, and 2018 winner Audible who ran third in his Derby try.
With two scratches, this year’s Holy Bull is expected to draw a tough field of seven starters.

2026 Holy Bull Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Nearly Race Odds: 9-5
The Florida-bred Nearly finished last in a field of six on debut at Aqueduct in late October, then shipped south to Gulfstream for his last two races.
He found the home soil to his liking as he crushed a field of state-bred maidens by more than nine lengths in his first try on the Gulfstream dirt. Last out he won again while stretching out to seven furlongs in an allowance event. That was against a field of four. Now he stretches out again and takes on tougher company.
2026 Holy Bull Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Cannoneer Odds: 2-1
Cannoneer ran third in his debut at Churchill in early June, and then went on the shelf for six months. When he came back in late November he was a different horse, taking his maiden win by 7 1/4 lengths.
That race was seven furlongs, and he stopped the clock in an eye-catching 1:21.3. He also earned a 100 Brisnet speed figure for his effort, making him the only horse in this field with a triple-digit number.
Incredibolt Race Odds: 9-2
Incredibolt comes into the race on a two-race winning streak, including last out when he won the (G3) Street Sense Stakes at Churchill in late October. That race was at this same 1 1/16 miles distance.
In that and his previous maiden-breaking win, he stalked the pace to the top of the stretch drive and then swept past rivals through the lane to win by open lengths.
Bravaro Race Odds: 8-1
Bravaro was also a stakes winner in October, taking the one-mile Sleepy Hollow Stakes at Aqueduct by 2 1/2 lengths. The third-place finisher in that one came back to be a next-out winner.
Both of Bravaro’s two lifetime wins have come against other New York state-breds. So here he faces open company for the first time and will also have to find a bit more speed to contend with the top three.
Here’s My 2026 Holy Bull Stakes Free Pick
Coming into this race Cannoneer projected to be the only real runner with lots of early speed, and the scratch of Buetane only makes that more of a sure thing. So far in the Gulfstream meet the track has been favouring speed, and there’s a very real possibility he’ll get loose on the lead and take them gate-to-wire.
I find it interesting that Incredibolt is the only horse in the field with a graded-stakes win and one of two with a win at the distance, but is being faded to third choice in the morning line. The key to the race will be how close or not he’s able to stick to Cannoneer early. He’s shown the ability to rally into both fast and slow paces and I think if he’s anywhere within three lengths as they turn for home, he’ll be able to run him down.
At his ML odds he offers value and I’ll take him for the narrow win over Cannoneer.
