This weekend’s 2026 Kentucky Derby qualifying series schedule features three different races around the US, including the (G2) Fountain Of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream.
Run at 1 1/16 miles on the Gulfstream dirt track, the FOY offers Derby qualifying points on a 50-25-15-10-5 scale to the top five finishers.
Recently the FOY has been a very productive step for horses headed to the Triple Crown races, with last year’s winner Sovereignty going on to win the Derby as well as the Belmont Stakes.
The 2024 winner Dornoch also won the Belmont, while 2023 winner Forte was the morning line favourite for the Derby but was scratched with a foot problem.
With two scratches, this year’s FOY is expected to draw a very good field of 9 starters.

2026 Fountain Of Youth Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Commandment Race Odds: 2-1
Commandment comes into this race off a pair of open-length wins, the most recent of those going one mile in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream.
Prior to that he scored his maiden win by 5 1/4 lengths at Churchill, where he broke a step slow and then had a fairly quick pace to close into. He has increased his speed figures with each of his three starts, but one concern is that none of the horses he beat in the last two have come back to show very much.
2026 Fountain Of Youth Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Napoleon Solo Odds: 7-2
Another one coming on off back-to-back open length wins, in the case of Napoleon Solo that makes him unbeaten in his young racing career.
He also has a Grade 1 win to his name, as his second victory was last October in the (G1) Champagne Stakes at Aqueduct. There he took the field gate-to-wire while producing very fast split times for the one-mile race.
This is his first start since then, but he has been training very well leading up to this.
Solitude Dude Race Odds: 5-1
Undefeated in three lifetime starts, Solitude Dude has two stakes wins to his name, taking the Inaugural Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs and most recently the Swale Stakes at Gulfstream. In the first of those he scored a 101 Equibase speed figure, the only triple-digit figure in this field.
He’ll be stretching out here past seven furlongs for the first time. He’s also a speedster with a lot of other speed to his inside and may have to work a bit early to get position breaking from an outside post.
Jackson Hole Race Odds: 8-1
After breaking his maiden going seven furlongs at Gulfstream in December, Jackson Hole shipped to Fair Grounds and stretched out to 1 1/16 miles to win a second-level allowance race by more than five lengths.
He’s one of only two in the race with a start at this distance, and the only one with a win.

One look at the past results makes it clear that this is an excellent field of three-year-old colts, and although we’re still 10 weeks from Derby day, it wouldn’t be surprising if at least a couple of these end up being among the favourites on the first Saturday in May.
Five of these are coming in on two-race win streaks, and in the case of Solitude Dude, that streak is three. One other has a maiden win in the only race of their career so far, and another won his first two starts and was second last out. Collectively, that’s about as good a form you’re going to find in any race, anywhere.
There’s also a lot of speed here. Three of the four listed above have won in gate-to-wire fashion, as has 20-1 long shot Rockies Balboa.
One of those with speed is Napoleon Solo, and in handicapping this race I kept coming back to his win in the Champagne. In control all the way, he clicked off the first half-mile in 44:24, the three-quarters in 1.07:88 and finished up the mile in 1:34.57.
That’s blazing fast and I don’t think it matters what the other speed does – if he runs back to those numbers, he’ll run the rest of them off their feet.
A young horse coming off a long layoff is always risky, but his recent works have been excellent and I expect him to fire a good one in his first three-year-old start.
I’ll take Napoleon Solo for the win, and use Jackson Hole in the exacta.
