2026 Flower Bowl Stakes Handicapping
Bad weather forced the cancellation of last weekend’s racing at the newly re-opened Belmont Park, but that gives horseplayers the opportunity to bet an excellent Thursday card instead.
The lineup includes six graded-stakes races, including the Grade 2 Flower Bowl for fillies and mares three years old and older. They’ll race 1 1/4 miles on the Belmont turf course, with the winner gaining automatic entry to the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf to be held October 31 at Keeneland.
The 2026 Flower Bowl has drawn a strong field of 11 expected starters, including several runners with graded-stakes credentials.
2026 Flower Bowl Stakes Handicapping: Kathynmarissa Race Odds: 7-5
Kathynmarissa brings the strongest recent résumé into the Flower Bowl after winning both the Grade 3 Modesty and Grade 1 Diana this season.
Trainer Chad Brown gave her some time following the Diana, and she returns as one of the leading North American contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. The 1 1/4-mile distance is the question she’ll have to answer, but she has twice finished second at the trip and should get every chance to work out the right trip under Jose Ortiz.
2026 Flower Bowl Stakes Handicapping: Cathedral Race Odds: 9-2
Chad Brown also sends out Cathedral, who makes another appearance against Kathynmarissa after finishing fourth behind her in the Diana.
The British-bred filly has already shown she belongs with quality company, including a fourth-place finish in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Flavien Prat gets the mount, and while post 10 isn’t ideal, Cathedral has enough back class to make her dangerous if she gets the right trip.
2026 Flower Bowl Stakes Handicapping: Gezora Race Odds: 6-1
Gezora is impossible to dismiss based on her best form. The Bill Mott trainee won last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and finished second behind Kathynmarissa in the Modesty earlier this season.
Her last couple of efforts haven’t been as strong, but this is a proven Grade 1 mare returning to a 1 1/4-mile distance that clearly isn’t a problem. If she rebounds to anything close to her best, she can make things interesting at a better price.
2026 Flower Bowl Stakes Handicapping: Sunlit Uplands Race Odds: 6-1
Sunlit Uplands is one of the more interesting runners in the field as she stretches out to 1 1/4 miles for the first time.
Her recent races have come at shorter distances, but she’s shown the ability to finish strongly and her connections believe the longer trip should be within her range. She’s facing a deeper group here, but that combination of upside and an unknown ceiling at the distance makes her worth considering underneath.

There’s plenty of quality in this field, and Gezora is particularly interesting if she can rediscover the form that made her a Breeders’ Cup winner last year. Cathedral also has enough class to be involved despite drawing outside.
But I’m going with Kathynmarissa. She’s coming into the Flower Bowl with the best recent form in the field after winning the Modesty and Diana, and Chad Brown has given her time to freshen up for this spot.
The 1 1/4-mile distance keeps this from being a free square, but she’s already run well at the trip without winning. If Kathynmarissa runs back to her Diana form, she’s the horse the rest of this field has to beat.
