2026 Arkansas Derby Handicapping
While the winner of the Arkansas Derby hasn’t gone on to win the Kentucky Derby in the past 10 years, go back 11 years to 2015 and you’ll find American Pharoah. Not only did he pull off the Arkansas/Kentucky double, he went on to become the first horse in 38 years to win the US Triple Crown. And then won the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Classic for good measure.
More recently, 2023 winner Angel Of Empire was third in the Kentucky Derby, while his sire Classic Empire was fourth in the 2017 Derby and second in the Preakness Stakes. Creator, the 2016 winner, would go on to win the Belmont Stakes that year.
After one scratch, this year’s Arkansas Derby is expected to draw a field of eight starters. They’ll race 1 1/8 miles on the Oaklawn dirt course.
Odds listed here are provided by the Oaklawn Park track oddsmaker.
2026 Arkansas Derby Free Pick & Handicapping: Renegade Race Odds: 3-5
Renegade earns strong favouritism in the ML based on his performance last out in the Sam F Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, where he swept past the field on the far turn and went on to win by 3 1/2 lengths.
The third place finisher there came back to be a next out winner of the (G3) Tampa Bay Derby. In previous races Renegade traded blows with the highly regarded Paladin, beating that one in a maiden race at Aqueduct (although he was subsequently DQ’d to second for bumping) and then running second to that one in the (G2) Remsen Stakes.
2026 Arkansas Derby Free Pick & Handicapping: Silent Tactic Race Odds: 5-2
A participant in all three legs of the Oaklawn Park Kentucky Derby prep races, the late-running Silent Tactic has a win and a second-place finish to show for his efforts in the first two legs.
He came running hard through the stretch to get up for the win two back in the (G3) Southwest Stakes, and came up just a nose short in the (G2) Rebel Stakes last out. Both of those races were at 1 1/16 miles, so now he gets an extra 1/16th to work with.
Litmus Test Race Odds: 5-1
Two back, the California-based Litmus Test picked up his first graded-stakes win in taking the (G2) Los Alamitos Futurity. After an eight week break he shipped east to run third in the Rebel, finishing more than five lengths behind Silent Tactic.
Prior to that he had made three consecutive starts in Grade 1 races in California, including running fourth but beaten by just 1 3/4 lengths in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Blackout Time Race Odds: 6-1
Blackout Time showed a lot of promise in his two-year-old season, breaking his maiden second time out over two next out winners, and then running second to future BC Juvenile winner Ted Noffey and ahead of Litmus Test in the (G1) Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland.
After that race in early October he was off for five months before starting in the Rebel where he ran close to the pace early before fading to fourth, eight lengths behind the winner. He’s put in solid works leading up to this, including a bullet four-furlong in 47 seconds flat on March 14th, the best of 90 on that day.
Here’s My 2026 Arkansas Derby Stakes Free Pick
A key factor in handicapping leading up to the Kentucky Derby is going back and watching various prep races to not only see what horses have won, but how they earned those wins.
Having done that, to my mind Renegade’s win in the Sam F Davis is the most visually impressive on the Derby trail so far. From breaking second-to-last in the eight-horse field, Renegade began his move as they entered the far turn and swept by the field like they were standing still, moving from sixth to first with ease and then going on to win by more than three lengths.
And this was despite the fact the pace in front wasn’t all that fast, so it’s not like he was passing tired horses.
Anything but a win would be a disappointment here. I pick him to win, but at low odds I’ll try to find some value by using Blackout Time behind him in the exacta.
