2025 Turf Mile Stakes Handicapping
Keeneland Race Course opens their fall meet with a bang this weekend, hosting no less than 11 stakes over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, several of those of the graded-stakes variety.
Among them is Saturday’s Turf Mile Stakes, open to horses three years and older racing a flat mile on the Keeneland turf course. The race is also a ‘Win and You’re In’ event for the the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Mile, to be held November 1 at Del Mar race track.
The Turf Mile has drawn a very solid field of 11 expected starters, including three shipping in from overseas and making their North America racing debut.

2025 Turf Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Diego Velazquez Race Odds: 7-2
Irish-bred Diego Velazquez comes into the race off a Group 1 win in France, at this mile distance over tuff rated as soft. He finished that race a head in front of a rival who came back to win the (G1) Woodbine Mile three weeks ago.
For his career he’s won three of six at the distance and six-of-eleven overall, with all but his very first start coming at the Group-stakes level in the UK, Ireland and France.
2025 Turf Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Program Trading Odds: 9-2
The top North American entrant in the field is Program Trading, who is actually a UK-bred but has done all of his running in the US. Last out he was second by a neck in the Bernard Baruch Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Saratoga Race Course.
Lightly raced for a five-year-old, he has five wins in eight lifetime starts, with two runner-up finishes. He also has a trio of Grade 1 victories on his resume, although all of them came at slightly longer distances and this will be his first time shortening up to one mile.
Woodshauna Race Odds: 5-1
The only three-year-old colt in the field, Woodshauna ships over from France, where last out he was third, beaten 1 3/4 lengths in a Group 1 race that marked his first time going up against older horses.
Prior to that he was a Group 1 winner racing seven furlongs in France against horses his own age. He’s never been out of the money in eight career races, with four wins. This will be his first try stretching out to a mile.
Donegal Momentum Race Odds: 12-1
The one that beat Program Trading last out in the Bernard Baruch, Donegal Momentum bobbled badly at the start of that race but was still able to take the field wire-to-wire.
He has five wins and two other in-the-money finishes in eight lifetime starts on firm turf, with three of those wins and ine runner-up placing coming in five starts at this distance.
Here’s My 2025 Turf Mile Stakes Free Pick
There’s always a bit of an unknown in terms of how European horses will handle shipping and racing in North America for the first time, and that has to be considered in your handicapping strategy.
But in this case, I have a feeling that the Euros are primed and ready and could handle this field. My sense is that Diego Velazquez has been pointed to this race all summer as a ticket to the BC Mile. In winning four of his last five in France, the UK and Ireland, he has been beating some very good horses. I’d love to get him at 7-2 and he’ll be my pick to win.
I’ll also use Woodshauna in the exacta. In his case, I note that he has a pair of wins on fast all-weather tracks, so firm going at Keeneland should suit. Three back he won on soft ground going six furlongs in an eye-catching 1:08.6 and it’ll be interesting to see if he can replicate that speed while going 2 furlongs further on a firm course on Saturday.
