What has been an excellent summer of racing at Saratoga draws to an end this weekend. There are multiple graded-stakes on tap to close out the meet, including the (G1) Jockey Club Gold Cup on Sunday.
Open to horses age three and up, the JCGC is run at 1 1/4 miles on the Saratoga dirt track. The race is a ‘Win And You’re In’ event for the 2025 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The winner of the Jockey Club Gold Cup will gain an automatic entry to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, to be held November 1 at Del Mar Race Course.
The race has drawn an excellent field of nine expected starters, including multiple graded-stakes winners and past Triple Crown contenders.

2025 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Sierra Leone Race Odds: 8-5
The hard charging Sierra Leone just missed winning both the 2024 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, but put it all together at the end of the season to win the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Classic.
He’s been third, then second, then first in three starts in 2025. He comes into this off a win in the (G1) Whitney Stakes at Saratoga one month ago, finishing ahead of a couple he’ll meet here again. Sierra Leone has never been out of the money in 12 lifetime starts, with five wins.
2025 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mindframe Odds: 2-1
He came to the races too late this past spring to have a chance to qualify for the 2024 Kentucky Derby, but Mindframe proved he could contend with the best three-year-olds in the country when he ran second in the (G1) Belmont Stakes. He was just a half-length behind the winner there, and one length in front of Sierra Leone.
He’s made three starts this year at age four and won them all, including back-to-back Grade 1 wins in the Churchill Downs Stakes at 7 furlongs, and the Stephen Foster Stakes at 1 1/8 miles. For his career he’s won five-of-seven starts, with two runner-up finishes.
Highland Falls Race Odds: 5-1
The defending race champ, Highland Falls kicked off 2025 with an easy five- length win in an allowance level event at Aqueduct in late June, and then stepped up to run second behind Sierra Leone in the Whitney.
It could be worth noting that he ran second in his prep for the JCGC last year before going on to win the race. He has won exactly half of his 12 lifetime starts, and finished first or second in six of his past seven races.
Banishing Race Odds: 15-1
Banishing is another that comes into the race after back-to-back wins. Last out he won the (G2) Charles Town Classic by 2 1/4 lengths, while prior to that he won the Jeff Hill Memorial Stakes at Ellis Park, sprinting 6 1’2 furlongs.
He has yet to try this 1 1/4 miles distance, but like several in here he’s ultra-consistent, running first or second in eight of nine races for his career.
Here’s My 2025 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes Free Pick
Looking at this race on paper there are not a lot of need-the-lead types in the field and several late running closers. It’s likely that Phileas Fogg (15-1) will be the one setting the pace, and jockey tactics by the rest will play a big part.
I’ve been a fan of Mindframe since last year’s Belmont – he might have won the race without some late weaving down the stretch – and he’s going to be my pick to win here. I think he’ll be sitting in good position stalking the leader into the far turn, and will have enough to hold off the rest down the stretch.
He’s already beaten Sierra Leone twice, and I think he’ll do it again.
I would suspect that he’ll be lower than his morning line odds come race time, and could even be the favourite. I’ll try to get some value and use under-the-radar Banishing in the exacta.
