2025 Forego Stakes Handicapping
It’s the biggest weekend of what has been an excellent summer race meet at Saratoga. On Saturday the Spa will host five Grade 1 races with the marquee event being the (G1) Travers Stakes. Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes and Jim Dandy Stakes winner Sovereignty is in the field, which has apparently been enough to scare away other top contenders. Only four will oppose him, making for the smallest Travers field in 30 years.
That being the case, there’s little-to-no betting value in the Travers, and so I’m going to look at other races. One of those is the (G1) Forego, for horses age four and older, racing 7 furlongs on the Saratoga dirt course. There’s also a heavy favourite in this race, but there’s a big field of 11 entered and a case can be made for at least a couple to pull off the upset.
The Forego is a ‘Win And You’re In’ for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, to be held November 1 at Del Mar Race Course.

2025 Forego Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Book’em Danno Race Odds: 8-5
Already a two-time graded stakes winner at Saratoga this summer, the popular New Jersey-bred Book’em Danno is being touted by many as the best dirt sprinter in North America right now.
He has won three-of-four overall this year, and is three-of-six lifetime at this distance with two other in-the-money finishes. Last out he won the (g2) Vanderbilt Stakes at Saratoga going six furlongs, hitting a career best 112 Brisnet speed figure, and stopping the clock in an eye-catching 1:08:80.
2025 Forego Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mullikin Odds: 7-2
The ultra-consistent Mullikin has hit the board in 12 of 14 lifetime starts with five wins. That number includes this race last year, when he took the field wire-to-wire and won by a comfortable 5 3/4 lengths.
On the fil side, that was the last time he visited the winner’s circle. Since then he’s made five starts without a victory, although he was the runner-up in three of his last four, all at the graded-stakes level. He’s been beaten by Book’em Danno in each of his last two starts.
Most Wanted Race Odds: 5-1
Unraced as a two-year-old, Most Wanted made his debut just over a year ago and since then has raced eight times. He’s won five of those, and finished second in the other three.
Although none of his wins have come at the Grade 1 level, he does have a Grade 3 win, and a pair of runner-up finishes in Grade 2s. Most have his races have been at longer distances, but he did score his maiden win first time out going 7 furlongs.
Bishops Bay Race Odds: 6-1
Another one with a very impressive lifetime resume, Bishops Bay has made 10 starts in his career and won seven of those, finishing second in three others.
While only five of those were at the stakes level, he has won two consecutive Grade 3 events, and comes in on a four-race win streak. It’s also notable that he has increased his speed figure in each of those wins.
Here’s My 2025 Forego Stakes Free Pick
This is shaping up to be an excellent race, arguably the highlight of Saratoga’s Saturday card. Seven of the 11 entries are coming into the race off a win, meaning they’re likely in top racing form. The race also has a good mix of pacesetters, mid-pack runners and deep closers.
Book’em Danno looks formidiable, but I don’t think he’s the lock that Sovereignty is in the Travers. Yet he’ll still go off at something like 6/5 or maybe even money. so I want to try and beat him.
With speed on the rail, I’m going to take Most Wanted for the win. I think he’ll get to control the pace early, and although Bishops Bay is likely to press him, I think he’s the better horse. On the cut back in distance from his last race, he should have something in the tank to try and hold off the favourite late.
