2025 Clark Stakes Handicapping
The US Thanksgiving weekend also marks the end of the Churchill Downs fall racing meet, with the Twin Spires track hosting a number of high profile races to end the season.
The biggest feature of the weekend happens on Friday with the running of the (G2) Clark Stakes. The Clark is open to horses aged three and older and is run at 1 1/8 miles on the Churchill dirt course.
For 2025 the Clark has drawn a very talented field of nine, including many multiple-stakes winners, a defending race champ, and a trio of younger colts that were seen last spring on the Triple Crown trail.

2025 Clark Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Hit Show Race Odds: 3-1
The tepid morning-line favourite, Hit Show comes in off a one-length win in the (G3) Fayetteville Stakes over several he’ll be facing here again.
While he’s won exactly half of his 22 lifetime starts, with five of those 11 wins coming at this 1 1/8 mile distance, he’s also a bit inconsistent and therefore hard to trust. Over his last eight races he’s been on a win-lose-win-lose pattern, and that would seem to indicate he’s a bet-against here.
2025 Clark Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Rattle N Roll Odds: 5-1
Rock N Roll was second to Hit Show in the Fayetteville, in a race where they both rallied from off the pace to run down the leader in deep stretch, a style that has been his calling card throughout his career.
He’s the defending race champ and has hit the board on the Churchill dirt eight times in 10 starts with four wins. However, he only has one win since taking the 2024 Clark, and that came immediately afterward in a race in Saudi Arabia last January, going 0-for-4 since then.
Magnitude Race Odds: 9-2
Magnitude looked like a solid Triple Crown runner last February when he picked up qualifying points with a 9 3/4 length win in the (G2) Risen Star Stakes.
Injuries put him on the shelf for six months following that race, only coming back in July to win the Iowa Derby by 9 1/2. He was no match next out in the (G1) Travers against the best three-year-olds in the country, but rallied late to grab second last out in the (G1) Pennsylvania Derby.
Chunk Of Gold Race Odds: 10-1
Another one that tried the Triple Crown trail in the spring, Chunk Of Gold has finished first or second in every one of his nine lifetime starts, except for a ninth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.
He’s shown steadily improving speed figures in each of his last four races, including a career-best 113 Equibase figure last out when he won a second-level allowance event at Keeneland. He won by more than eight lengths when taking the field gate-to-wire.
Here’s My 2025 Clark Stakes Free Pick
While there are a couple of front-running types in this field that should assure at least an honest early pace, I’m not as convinced as some that it’s going to be blazing fast and and set up for the closers like Hit Show and Rattle N Roll.
There are two ways of playing this. One would be to look at the horses coming out of the Fayetteville Stakes, and play those one top and in the exotics. The other way is to look elsewhere, and I’m going to take a shot for some value with Chunk Of Gold.
I like his consistency and the fact he’s been first or second four times in four tries at the distance. He has the speed to be in the early mix, and I do have some concern that he may have to be on the lead to win. But he stands out to me as one who is at the top of his game, and this might be the spot for him to get his graded-stakes breakthrough win.
