2025 Cigar Mile Handicap Handicapping
The 2025 racing season is winding down, but there’s still lots of top-level stakes action to be had before we turn the page to the new year.
On Saturday afternoon Aqueduct will play host to five stakes races on their 11-race card, including the (G2) Cigar Mile Handicap. The race is open to horses age three and older and is run at a one-turn mile on the Aqueduct dirt course.
A field of nine is expected to go post-ward, including three that already have at least one graded-stakes victory on their resume.

2025 Cigar Mile Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Phileas Fogg Race Odds: 9-5
In less than a year, the speedy Phileas Fogg has progressed from the claiming ranks right up to becoming a graded-stakes winner, which he did by capturing the (G2) Suburban Stakes at Saratoga this past July.
He’s a front-running horse that has reeled of five consecutive 100+ Brisnet speed figures, while no one else in the field has more than two.
In five races at Aqueduct he has three wins and two runner-up finishes, and he has a win and a second in two starts at this one mile distance.
2025 Cigar Mile Handicap Free Pick & Handicapping: Bishops Bay Odds: 2-1
Injury kept Bishops Bay away from the track for all but one race in 2024, but he’s come back strong in his five-year-old season with five wins and one runner-up effort in seven 2025 starts.
Among those are a pair of one-mile wins at Aqueduct, including last out when he won the (G3) Forty Niner Stakes by 3/4 of a length after stalking the early pace and battling through a stretch duel.
Crazy Mason Race Odds: 7-2
Crazy Mason took on some tough company this summer in both the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar and the Grade 1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga where he ran third.
Back at a more suitable level last out, he was second by 1 1/2 lengths in the (G3) Vosburgh going seven furlongs at Aqueduct. He has three wins in five starts at the track, and one win in three tries at the distance. He’s one that likes to come running late, and should have some pace to close into here.
Doc Sullivan Race Odds: 5-1
The local hope, Doc Sullivan is a New York-bred that has hit the board in 14 of 19 lifetime starts, including eight of 13 at Aqueduct, with four wins.
His past performance may be a bit misleading, as many of his races have been in restricted stakes. However, he did race this summer in open company in both the Forego and Vosburgh Stakes, finishing a close-up fourth in each. He comes in off a 5 1/2 length win in the New York Stallion Series stakes going seven furlongs at Aqueduct.

It’s interesting to note that ML favourite Phileas Fogg will be cutting back to the one-mile distance for the first time in more than a year, as his last seven starts have ranged from 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 miles. In those races he’s been successful in using his speed to control the early pace, but there’s other speed signed on here and for that reason I think he can be beat.
I’m going to try and get a bit better value and play Bishops Bay for the win. I think he will be able to sit a good stalking trip while Phileas Fogg and Mika (12-1) battle it out up front. If he can stay close enough early he should get the jump as they turn for home.
The weather could be a mess in New York on Saturday, with the possibility of both snow and rain in forecast. Doc Sullivan (4), Bishops Bay (2) and Phileas Fogg (2) all have multiple wins on off tracks.
