Before we can give you our expert 2025 Turf free pick, we have to break down the entries! In fact, we’d love to hear from you after you’ve given this post a read to see if you see an angle that we don’t!
2025 Turf Handicapping
The Breeders’ Cup race with the second-highest total purse on offer, the Turf is open to horses three and older, running a long 1 1/2 miles on the grass.
In general, Europe produces better turf horses than North America, particularly for long-distance races. This is clearly in evidence when it comes to recent results in the Turf, as horses bred in Ireland or Great Britain have won nine of the past 10 Breeders’ Cup Turf races.
It goes even further than that, as six times Irish or UK horses grabbed the top two spots, and three times they finished 1-2-3-4. Last year, horses shipping in from overseas, including a pair of Japan-bred runners and one from France, captured the top eight spots in the 13-horse race.
While favourites have won four of the last 10, value can be found with horses that may go to the gate as the second or third choice among the Euros. As the turf course at Del Mar can be expected to be firm, look for Euros that have had success running on tracks rated as good overseas, as opposed to soft or heavy.
Odds listed here are provided by the Del Mar track handicapper.
2025 Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Minnie Hauk Race Odds: 8-5
Most three-year-old fillies would be in over their heads going up against older males in a long-distance turf race, but in this case Minnie Hauk is instead the clear favourite.
She’s the definition of a phenom who after running second in her career debut reeled off five wins in a row, against increasingly tougher competition, until last out when she came just 50 yards short of winning the (G1) Arc d’Triomphe, Europe’s premier race.
She’s 3-for-4 at the distance with one runner-up finish. She’s 1-for-1 on firm turf and has an overall record of five wins and two runner-up finishes in seven starts.
2025 Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Rebel’s Romance Odds: 5-2
In the 41 year history of the Breeders’ Cup, no horse has won the same race three times, but that’s exactly what Rebel’s Romance will try to do on Saturday.
And he just may be able to pull it off. He’s won four of his last five, and prepped for this with an easy win over the best US turf racers by winning the (G1) Turf Classic at Aqueduct by 3 1/2 lengths. He’s that rare Euro that seems to thrive on firmer grass, winning six-of-seven on the surface.
He’s won 14 of 19 at the distance, and is a perfect 1-for-1 at Del Mar.
Amiloc Race Odds: 10-1
Showing some precocity of his own, Amiloc started his career last year with two consecutive wins on synthetic tracks, and then came back for his three-year-old season and won three more when switched to turf.
Those included the (G2) King Edward II Stakes at Ascot at this distance over a track rated good-fast. Last out he took on older for the first time and ran second in the (G1) Irish St Leger Stakes going 1 3/4 miles. The third-place runner in that one came back to win his next race.
Ethical Diamond Race Odds: 30-1
The odds reflect the fact this Irish-bred has yet to win at the Group stakes level across the pond, but Ethical Diamond deserves a look simply because he’s started out racing flat races, switched to hurdles for awhile and then went back to turf.
With that switch he’s won two major handicaps in a row on tracks rated good-fast. He’s two-for-three at the distance and also two-for-three on firm turf. It’s a weird one, but that very weirdness is why I want to find a way to use him.
Here’s My 2025 Turf Free Pick
We know that Minnie Hauk can handle the distance and the surface. we also know that she can hold her own against older runners and males. What we don’t know is how she’ll handle shipping and the flow of North American racing, where the early pace tends to be much faster than in Europe.
Given that, I’m going to try to beat her with the one we know already can do it in Rebel’s Romance. He stands head-and-shoulders above his North American competition and at age seven is still one of the best in Europe. Jockey William Buick has ridden him in 24 of his 29 lifetime races and knows how to win with him better than anyone.
I’m betting he handles the filly and makes history.
