Before we can give you our expert 2025 Juvenile Turf free pick, we have to break down the entries! In fact, we’d love to hear from you after you’ve given this post a read to see if you see an angle that we don’t!
2025 Juvenile Turf Handicapping
The one mile Juvenile Turf closes out the opening Friday of Breeders’ Cup weekend, and historically European-bred or raced horses have dominated, winning seven of the last 10 races. That number includes Mendelsshon and Hit It A Bomb, both of which were Kentucky-breds that did all their racing overseas prior to winning at the Breeders’ Cup.
Overall, the Euros have won 13 of 18 editions of the BC Juvenile Turf. Just as significant, the trainer/jockey combination of Aiden O’Brien and Ryan Moore have won seven of those 18 races, including the last three in a row.
One of the more controversial moments in Breeders’ Cup history occurred in the 2021 Juvenile Turf, when Modern Games was inadvertently announced as being scratched at the gate. Ultimately Modern Games ran as a non-betting entry and then proceeded to win the race, much to the chagrin of bettors (such as myself) who had picked him to win.

2025 Juvenile Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Gstaad Race Odds: 9-5
Mixing it up with some of the very best juvenile turf runners in Europe, Gstaad has been first-or-second in all five of his career starts. He’s had three straight runner-up finishes in his last three starts, all in Group 1 company in France, Ireland and England.
He’s handled turf listed from yielding to good-fast, up to distances of seven furlongs. He stretches out to a mile here for the first time.
2025 Juvenile Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Argos Odds: 6-1
The steadily improving Argos comes in off of two straight races up at Woodbine. He was third in the Soaring Free Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs, and then took a big step forward next out to win the one mile (G1) Summer Stakes.
He broke his maiden over soft turf at Ellis Park this past summer, beating a runner that was a next-out winner.
Bottas Race Odds: 6-1
Last out in the (G2) Pilgrim Stakes at Aqueduct, Bottas was impressive in closing into a fairly slow pace but still getting up to win by a head.
He’s won both of his starts and both came at a 1 1/16 miles distance, so he’s cutting back to the shortest race yet in his brief career. The problem might be that he’s one that wants more distance rather than less.
Hey Nay Nay Race Odds: 8-1
An Irish bred who has done all his racing in the US, Hey Nay Nay is a three-time winner at three different tracks.
His first two wins came in five furlong sprints, including a win by more than 7 lengths in a stakes race at Monmouth. He then shipped all the way across the country to Del Mar and won the (G3) Del Mar Juvenile Turf on the track and at the distance.
Here’s My 2025 Juvenile Turf Free Pick
My feeling is the first four races on Breeders’ Cup Friday will run pretty much to form, and I’m not expecting any big price winners. With that in mind, I’m going to take a bit of a shot here with Hey Nay Nay.
I think the recency of his one-mile win at Del Mar is key, in a race where he scored his lifetime best speed figure. Breaking from an outside post I think he’ll be hustled to the lead and may just be able to steal it on the front end.
That’s not to discount the talent of Gstaad, but you have to wonder if he’s come down with a case of second-itis. I’m hoping that he runs second again.
