2025 Blame Stakes Handicapping
Named for a multiple graded-stakes winner who closed his career by winning the 2010 (G1) Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs, the (G3) Blame Stakes is open to horses age four and older. They’ll run 1 1/8 miles on the Churchill dirt track.
The race has drawn a strong field of 10 entries, including 2023 Kentucky Derby champ Mystik Dan, who is looking to get back in the winner’s circle for the first time since that photo-finish victory six races ago.
The Blame is the feature race of an excellent Saturday card at Churchill that includes five other stakes races.

2025 Blame Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Post Time Race Odds: 3-1
Flying somewhat under the radar in comparison to some of his better-known peers, Post Time has quietly put together an outstanding racing resume that includes 10 wins and six other in-the-money finishes in his 16-race career.
After closing out 2024 by running third in the (G2) Churchill Mile in December, he came back to the track in early May in what was essentially a paid workout, winning an allowance event on the Kentucky Derby undercard by 13 lengths. Prior to the Churchill Mile, he ran second in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup dirt mile.
He likes to come from off the pace in a race that may not have a lot of early pace to chase.
2025 Blame Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Most Wanted Odds: 7-2
Most Wanted is one of those in the field who likes to go to the front and set or press the pace as he did most recently in the (G2) Alysheba Stakes at Churchill. He was sent to the front right out of the gate and carved out some solid early fractions before being caught and passed in the stretch.
He finished second by 1 1/2 lengths in a race that came back in track-record time. That was his third consecutive runner-up result after starting his career with four consecutive victories.
Mystick Dan Race Odds: 4-1
After winning the Derby and running second in the (G1) Preakness Stakes last year, it appeared that a tough spring racing campaign caught up with Mystik Dan in the (G1) Belmont where he was a well-beaten eighth.
Following that he was off for six months and then was up the track again in the (G1) Malibu (at a seven-furlong distance that was probably too short for him) and the (G1) Pegasus World Cup Invitational.
With another three months off he came back and ran well to be beaten by just a nose to the very tough Saudi Crown in the Lake Ouchita Stakes going 1 1/16 miles at Oaklawn Park.
Banishing Race Odds: 9-2
Banishing has run first or second in nine consecutive races while knocking heads with some very tough competition in the likes of multiple graded-stakes winners Mind Frame, Skippylongstocking and First Mission.
He was second last out in the (G1) Churchill Downs Stakes going seven furlongs over a muddy track.

This is a very interesting race to try and handicap in that it’s a quality field of horses, but there are definite negatives to go with the positives among all the top contenders.
The biggest enigma might be Mystik Dan. Is he the Triple Crown contender that we saw a year ago, or the also-ran we saw close out 2024? Is his last-out effort at Oaklawn an indication that he’s back to form, or will he regress off that effort?
For others such as Post Time and Banishing, distance might be the big question as both seem to have their best efforts when going a mile or less. And has Most Wanted become a horse with a case of the dreaded “second-itis” after three consecutive runner-up finishes?
What we do know is that both Most Wanted and Mystik Dan can win at a longer distance and both have had solid results when racing at Churchill. So I’m going to lean on that, and pick them to finish in that order, Most Wanted on top of Mystik Dan.
