2025 American Oaks Stakes Handicapping
Sunday racing at Santa Anita in sunny California offers up an excellent card with five graded stakes, including the (G1) American Oaks.
First run at Hollywood Park in 2002 as an invitational event, the race was moved to Santa Anita when Hollywood closed in 2013. Last year’s winner, She Feels Pretty, went on to run second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf this past November.
The race is open to three-year-old fillies, and they’ll race 1 1/4 miles on Santa Anita’s unique downhill turf course.

2025 American Oaks Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Atsila Race Odds: 5-2
The tepid morning line favourite, Atsila ships in from Europe, where she has made starts in the UK and France as well as her native Ireland.
A winner of a Group 3 stake at the Curragh in May, she’s been taking on tough Group 1 company in five starts since then, with her best result a third-place finish two back in the (G1) Matron at Leopardstown. Here she makes her US debut while stretching out past one mile for the first time.
2025 American Oaks Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Will Then Odds: 7-2
California-based Will Then has also gone five consecutive races without a win, but last visited the winner’s circle in her only previous start at Santa Anita when she won the one-mile China Doll Stakes back in March.
She showed speed out of the gate last out in the (G3) Red Carpet Stakes at Del Mar and led into the stretch, but flattened late to finish fifth beaten two lengths. That race was at 1 3/8 miles, so she gets a cut back here.
Cliffs Race Odds: 6-1
The lightly raced Cliffs only has five lifetime starts but she’s won two of those with one runner-up and one third-place finish on her resume.
Last out she closed strongly down the lane to get up and win by a head racing one mile in a first-level allowance race at Churchill Downs. Two back she also closed late to get up for second in a race at 1 1/8 miles, and looks like she should appreciate the added distance here.
As Catch Can Race Odds: 8-1
The well travelled As Catch Can has made 11 starts at six different race tracks and has three wins, three seconds and a third for her efforts.
She was last seen in late September at Colonial Downs where she won the listed Old Dominion Stakes by 3/4 of a length. That race was at 1 1/8 miles over soft ground. One of her wiins has come over the all weather surface at Woodbine, so she should have no problem on firm turf.

There’s little question that the UK shipper Atsila is taking a drop down in class here from what she’s been facing in races overseas, and that alone might be enough to get her into the winner’s circle.
But there are questions as to how she’ll handle US racing for the first time as well as trying a distance of ground beyond any of her previous races.
For me that’s reason enough to try and beat her and take a bit of a shot with Cliffs. There’s not a ton of speed signed on here, and typically you’d like to see some pace up front for her to close into. But I think the distance will be key and even without a meltdown on the front end she’ll be one that will be running and making up ground late.
