Kicking off the two days of Breeders’ Cup racing action is the Juvenile Turf Sprint. Open to both fillies and colts age two, the sprint is a quick five-furlong, one-turn drag race on the Del Mar turf course.
First run in 2018, the Juvenile Turf Sprint is the newest race on the Breeders’ Cup lineup. North American based horse captured the win the first three times the race was run, while European-based horses have won the last three.
The trainer-jockey combination of Wesley Ward and Irad Ortiz Jr. won the Juvenile Turf Sprint three consecutive years from 2019 to 2021.

2024 Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Ecoro Sieg Race Odds: 7-2
Kentucky-bred Ecoro Sieg ships in from Japan as the least experienced runner the race with only two starts under his saddle. While it’s hard to judge the competition he faced, there’s no doubt he was visually impressive in winning both.
Both of those wins came at six furlongs over firm turf, and the finishing times put him far ahead of any others here at the same distance. He gets slightly less distance here, but he should be up on the pace early under a jockey who has won at the breeders’ Cup before.
2024 Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Big Mojo Race Odds: 4-1
Irish invader Big Mojo was a Group 3 winner three starts back at the distance and on a track rated good-fast, but has just missed in his last two on softer surfaces. One of those was at a stretch out to six furlongs, so here he gets back to what is a better distance and a surface that should be to his liking.
Aesterius Race Odds: 9-2
Another Irish-bred colt, this one and Big Mojo will be meeting for the third time, with each claiming one narrow win over the other. Last out Aesterius came out on top by a neck in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster.
In six races at five furlongs he has four wins and one runner-up finish.
Whistlejacket Race Odds: 5-1
Yet another Euro, Whistlejacket was a Group 1 winner France two starts back and scored a Group 2 win at Newmarket in mid July.
He has been the favourite in all seven of his lifetime starts and has three wins and three second-place finishes to show for his efforts.

Not surprising for a turf sprint, early speed is a big factor here, as four of the six winners of this race have taken the field wire-to-wire, with one other having been second through the early going.
In Europe races of this distance are run on a straight track with no turns, so how they will be able to carry their speed on a left-hand turn at Del Mar is always a question. The bigger question, however, might be surface, as none of the Irish contenders have run on a turf as firm as they’ll be getting on Friday.
All that being said, I’m going to take the chalk and pick Ecoro Sieg for the win. I just can’t ignore those six-furlong winning times, and if he can deliver that kind of speed here, he can either take them all the way or come from just off the pace.
