2024 Filly & Mare Sprint Handicapping
Kicking off Super Saturday at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, the Filly & Mare Sprint is open to female horses age three and older. The race covers 7 furlongs on the Del Mar dirt.
Added to the Breeders’ Cup list of races in 2007, the Filly & Mare Sprint has produced a pair of back-to-back winners, with Groupie Doll coming out on top in both 2012 and 2013, and more recently Goodnight Olive winning the past two years.
With that one now retired, 2024 will see a new horse claiming the title of Queen of the Speed.

2024 Filly & Mare Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Ways And Means Race Odds: 5-2
After trying to stretch out and taking a shot at the (G1) Kentucky Oaks at 1 1/8 miles this past spring, Ways And Means is back racing shorter distances and has responded with three consecutive wins. Those have ranged from 6 1/2 furlongs to a mile.
Her last two were over off tracks, but she also has a pair of wins and a pair of runner-up finishes on fast dirt. She was the winner of the (G1) Test Stakes at Saratoga two back, and followed that up by winning the (G2) Gallant Bloom Stakes at Aqueduct one month ago.
2024 Filly & Mare Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Society Race Odds: 3-1
Fourth in this race last year, Society is something of a seven furlong specialist, as seven of her 14 lifetime starts have come at this distance, as have four of her eight lifetime wins.
She’s only made two starts this summer, running third first time after a eight-month layoff, and then getting right back to form when scoring a 3 1/4 length win in the (G1) Ballerina Handicap at Saratoga over a couple rivals she’ll be meeting again here.
Vahva Race Odds:4-1
Speaking of distance specialists, Vahva has made eight starts at 7 furlongs and has never been out of the money in those races, with five wins, two seconds and third.
She was the beaten favourite in the Ballerina, but she does have a Grade 1 win on the year after taking the Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs back in May. She followed that up with a win in the (G3) Chicago Stakes also at Churchill, where she beat Society by 1 1/2 lengths.
One Magic Philly Race Odds: 10-1
California-based One Magic Filly has a pair of wins sprinting at Del Mar, including a first-level allowance win two back where she posted a 112 Equibase speed figure, the highest among any in this race.
She did follow that up with a win in the (G3) Chillingworth Stakes at Santa Anita, her first try at the graded-stakes level. Here she’ll be taking another big step up in class.

It’s often said that the seven furlongs is a real specialty distance, and so I think it makes a lot of sense to key in on a horse that has had lots of success in races of that length. The record of Vahva speaks for itself, and although she disappointed a bit in the Ballerina, she’s shown in the past an ability to bounce back with a very good effort after a poor one.
I don’t see anyone outside of the top three winning this race, so I’ll make her my pick while getting the best value in the ML odds.
