2023 Rebel Stakes Handicapping

A big pile of cash and 2023 Kentucky Derby qualifying points are both up for grabs on Saturday at Oaklawn Park with the running of the (G2) Rebel Stakes.

The Rebel will award the top five finishers with Derby points on a 50-20-15-10-5 scale with a win almost assuring a spot in the Churchill Downs starting gate on the first Saturday in May. It’s important to realize that in years past 50 points have been enough to make the Derby field.

At any rate it’s no surprise the Rebel has drawn a very competitive field of 11 starters. They’ll race 1 1/16 miles on the Oaklawn dirt track.

2023 Rebel Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Verifying Race Odds: 2-1

A son of 2017 Triple Crown winner Justify, Verifying has made four starts so far in his career and has two wins and a runner-up finish in his resume.

He was away from the races after running sixth in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in early November, but had a solid 2023 debut when he won an allowance level event going one mile on the Oaklawn track in mid-January.

He’s one of two in the race for trainer Brad Cox, jockey Florent Geroux will be in the irons.

2023 Rebel Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Giant Mischief Race Odds: 5-2

Making his 2023 debut, Giant Mischief has an overall record of two wins and a runner-up finish in three lifetime starts so far.

After a first out maiden win at Horseshoe Indianapolis, he shipped to Keeneland and chased a very fast pace to win a seven furlong sprint.

What’s more, last out he blew the start and had to come from last of nine in the Springboard Mile Stakes. Regardless, he made a strong move in deep stretch to get up for second.

Reincarnate Race Odds: 7-2

California-based Reincarnate took four starts to get his maiden win although as a matter of fact he was second in his first three lifetime starts.

Meanwhile, after finally breaking through two starts back he stepped up to stakes company and won the (G3) Sham Stakes in wire-to-wire fashion over the highly regarded Newgate. Besides that recent success, another key point is that he has has increased his Equibase speed rating with every start.

In any event, he’s trained by Tim Yakteen, veteran John Velazquez will ride.

Gun Pilot Race Odds: 8-1

On the negative side, Gun Pilot is going to be stepping up to stakes racing for the first time, while on the positive side he has made two consecutive starts on the Oaklawn dirt and had a second-place finish and a win in those.

In general it’s always good to have a horse coming into a race with a recent win on the track, although it’s important to realize that last out win came in a comparatively slow time.

He’s trained by Steve Asmussen, with Ricardo Santana Jr. tapped to ride.

On paper there’s without a doubt a lot of early speed signed on for this race, and typically that would mean it sets up well for a closer. On this occasion, I also think there’s enough talent in the front-running group that at least a couple of them will still be running at the end.

The poor start in the Springboard Mile likely cost Giant Mischief a win there, and with a clean break I think he can get the job done here. Additionally, he has put in some really solid works in prepping for this and all-in-all I think he’s sitting on a big effort and will be my pick to win.
