2022 Queen’s Plate Stakes Handicapping
We’re back on the Triple Crown trail this weekend, although that trail runs through Canada with the running of the Queen’s Plate, first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.
Now in its 168th year, The Plate is the oldest continuously run stakes race in North America. Open to three-year-old horses foaled in Canada, they’ll run 1 1/4 miles on the Woodbine all-weather surface.
The 2022 Queen’s Plate has drawn a wide-open field of 11 and offers some excellent betting value.
Odds listed here are provided by the Woodbine track handicapper.
2022 Queen’s Plate Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Moira Race Odds: 5-2
Fillies have done very well in the Queen’s Plate of late, winning four of the last 11 races, and Moira will try to make that five of 12.
She only has four previous starts to her name, but every one of those starts has been at the stakes level. She’s won three of those and was second in the other. Last time out she was an easy 10-length winner of the 1 1/8 mile Woodbine Oaks.
The trainer is Kevin Attard. Jockey Rafael Hernandez won the race in 2015.
2022 Queen’s Plate Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Rondure Race Odds: 3-1
Sired by 2013 Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow, Rondure failed to hit the board in his first two starts as a two-year-old last year, but has taken a big step forward in 2022, winning two-of-three with one runner-up finish.
Last out he was a five-length winner of the (G3) Marine Stakes, where he tracked just behind a relatively slow early pace before taking over on the stretch and going on to win by 5 1/2 lengths.
Katerina Vassilieva trains, while 2019 winner Flavien Prat comes north of the border to ride.
2022 Queen’s Plate Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Causin’ Mayhem Race Odds: 6-1
Ontario-bred but US based, Causin’ Mayem has hit the board in all three of his lifetime races, scoring his maiden win two starts back at Belmont Park.
Last out he set the pace in the Plate Trial before giving up the lead in the stretch, was shuffled back to fifth, but re-rallied late to grab the third-place money. He’s likely to be on or near the lead again as he tries to carry his speed a bit further.
He’s trained by Todd Pletcher, jockey Antonio Gallardo will begin the irons.
2022 Queen’s Plate Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Sir For Sure Race Odds: 8-1
After breaking his maiden going one mile at Gulfstream Park, Sir For Sure shipped to Woodbine to try sprinting 7 furlongs in the Queenston Stakes where he ran a dull sixth.
Stretched out last time for the 1 1/8 Plate Trial, he raced wide throughout and then overcame some bumping at the top of the stretch to reel in Causin’ Mayhem and three others to open up and win by two lengths.
He’s one of two in the field for two-time race winning trainer Mark Casse. Jockey Declan Carroll is tapped to ride.
Here’s My 2022 Queen’s Plate Stakes Free Pick.
One thing about racing in Canada, with the smaller talent pool of top-level horses, many that run in a race like this have recently raced each other – six of the entries here ran in the Plate Trial, three in the Marine Stakes and one both. That gives a bit of handicapping info you don’t usually get in US stakes races.
The wildcard is the filly Moira, and if she runs back to her effort in the Woodbine Oaks she could wn this by open lengths. However, at a short price and going against males the first time, I’m going to try and beat her and get some value.
As the Plate Trial winner, 8-1 seems like an overlay on Sir For Sure and I expect he’ll be lower than that when the gates open, but I’ll play him for the win. I think they’ll get very similar fractions to what they had in the Trial where he sat just off the pace and the added distance will be a benefit.
