2022 Jerome Stakes Handicapping
Kentucky Derby qualifying points are up for grabs on New Year’s Day at Aqueduct, as the track plays host to the Jerome Stakes. Derby points will be awarded to the top four finishers in a 10-4-2-1 scale.
Open to horses age three, the Jerome is run at one mile on the Aqueduct dirt track. The 2022 race has drawn a competitive field of eight starters.
Odds listed here are provided by the Aqueduct track handicapper.
2022 Jerome Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Cooke Creek Race Odds: 5-2
After starting his career with two consecutive victories at Delaware Park, Cooke Creek shipped up to Belmont and stepped into graded-stakes racing last out in the (G3) Nashua Stakes.
Despite racing four wide for most of the one-mile distance, he was able to rally into a pretty solid pace and get up for the second-place money, albeit 2 3/4 lengths behind the winner.
The trainer is Jeremiah O’Dwyer, 2018 race winner Manny Franco is in the saddle.
2022 Jerome Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Ohtwoohthreefive Race Odds: 7-2
A relative veteran in this field with six lifetime starts, Ohtwoohthreefive has been very competitive racing strictly on turf, where he has a win, two seconds and two thirds on his record.
Now the connections will try him on dirt for the first time after he just missed in the Central Park Stakes where he led late and was nailed at the wire at odds of 23-1. His 93 Equibase speed rating for that effort is tops in this field.
He’s trained by George Weaver, Kendrick Carmouche gets the riding assignment.
2022 Jerome Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Hagler Race Odds: 4-1
The Florida-bred Hagler has made all three of his lifetime starts in New York, with a win and a runner-up finish in two races at Belmont Park, and a second win last out going seven furlongs in the Aqueduct dirt.
In that race he took the small field wire-to-wire, and showed some grit to dig in and hold off a late challenge from the runner up. He’ll be stepping up into stakes company for the first time.
Rudy Rodriguez tries for his second Jerome win as trainer, Jorge Vargas Jr. is the jock.
2022 Jerome Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Courvoisier Race Odds: 5-1
Courvoisier has finished in the money in all four of his career starts, but needed all four to get his maiden win, which came last out on the Aqueduct dirt.
That race came back with a fairly slow time, and speed figure for the win was nothing to brag about. However, the race was run at 1 1/8 miles, and so the cut back in distance could prove to be beneficial.
Kelly Breen trains, while 2020 race winner Jose Ortiz will ride.
Here’s My 2022 Jerome Stakes Free Pick.
None of these horses really stand out in this well-matched field, and there is some question as to overall quality, as even the recent winners haven’t looked particularly fast in their most recent races.
Ohtwoohthreefive is intriguing with the surface switch, and Hagler looks to be the lone speed and could steal it on the front end. However, I’m going to take the horse with the best recent outing against the best competition and play Cooke Creek for the win off the runner-up finish in the Nashua.
