2021 Withers Stakes Handicapping
One of the most historic races on the US thoroughbred calendar, the first Withers was run in 1874, one year prior to the first Kentucky Derby.
Open to horses age three, and as part of the qualifying series for the Derby, the Withers awards points to the top four finishers on a 10-4-2-1 scale. For 2021, the Withers has drawn a good betting field of nine starters, and they’ll race 1 1/8 miles on the Aqueduct dirt track.
Odds listed here are from the Aqueduct track handicapper.
2021 Withers Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Risk Taking Race Odds: 5-2
The lukewarm morning line favourite, Risk Taking closed out 2020 by scoring his maiden win at Aqueduct in his third career start.
To get that win he raced well off a very slow pace but was still able to have enough kick in the stretch to close six lengths on the leader to then win by 2 1/4. He had shown little in his first two lifetime starts, finishing seventh and then sixth, with the second of those on the turf.
Trainer Chad Brown and jockey Eric Cancel both try for their first Withers win.
2021 Withers Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Capo Kane Race Odds: 3-1
California-bred Capo Kane has made all three of his lifetime starts on the East coast, and last time out he caught a muddy Aqueduct track that he loved when taking the Jerome Stakes by more than six lengths.
He started his career with two races at Parx Racing in Philadelphia, and in the second of those he scored a very good 94 Equibase speed figure for a 4 1/2 length maiden win, going just over a mile on the Parx dirt.
He’s trained by Harold Wyner. Jockey Dylan Davis won the Withers in 2020.
2021 Withers Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Donegal Bay Race Odds: 7-2
Set to make just his third lifetime start, Donegal Bay ships up from Florida, where he was a last-out maiden winner taking the field wire-to-wire to score by more than four lengths racing one mile on the Gulfstream park dirt.
He had made his career debut back in August at Saratoga, finishing sixth. He was then away from the races for four months before coming back to get the win at Gulfstream.
Trainer Todd Pletcher has three previous Withers wins to his name. Jockey Kendrick Camouche is tapped to ride.
2021 Withers Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Eagle Orb Race Odds: 10-1
The most experienced colt in the field, Eagle Orb has made six previous starts with five in-the-money finishes, two for those for wins.
He ran second – though well back of Capo Kane – in the Jerome Stakes, but prior to that he picked up his first lifetime stakes win when rallying from back in the pack to get up and win the Notebook Stakes at Aqueduct by open lengths.
He’s a Rudy Rodriguez trainee, Jorge Vargas Jr. will be in the irons.
Here’s My 2021 Withers Stakes Free Pick.
While a few in here are coming in off wins, none has really put in an eye-popping performance that really stands out. I like the fact Risk Taking has a win at the track and distance, but that race came back in a very slow time.
For me, Donegal Bay will be the win pick. He should have no problem getting to the front in this field, and from there it’s just a question of the getting the distance. The horse he beat last time out at Gulfstream has since come back to win his next start, and that’s always a key handicapping angle.
