2021 Sword Dancer Stakes Handicapping
The co-feature on Saturday’s excellent Saratoga race lineup, the (G1) Sword Dancer not only offers a $1 million total purse, but also provides the winner with automatic entry into the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf event.
Open to horses age four and older, the Sword Dancer is run at a tough 1 1/2 miles on the Saratoga turf course. The race has drawn a fairly wide-open field of seven with no heavy favourite and offers some good betting value.
Odds listed here are provided by the Saratoga track handicapper.
2021 Sword Dancer Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Tribhuvan Race Odds: 2-1
A French-bred colt that has spent the past two years racing stateside, Tribhuvan draws in as the slight pre-race favourite as the winner of three of his last four, two of those in graded stakes.
He has been showing a lot of good early speed in his most recent starts, and last out went wire-to-wire to capture the (G1) United Nations Stakes by two lengths racing 1 3/8 miles, although both the speed figure and final race time came back a bit slow.
He’s one of two entered for trainer Chad Brown who has won the race on three previous occasions. The jockey is Flavian Prat.
2021 Sword Dancer Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Gufo Race Odds: 3-1
The ultra consistent Gufo has raced 11 times in his career and has finished in the money in all 11, with six wins, two seconds and three thirds.
He was the last-out winner of the Grand Couturier Stakes at Belmont Park, and owns a Grade 1 victory after taking the Belmont Derby Invitational last October. He likes to close from off the pace and he should get lots of early speed to run at here.
Trainer Christophe Clement is a two-time winner of the Sword Dancer, jockey Joel Rosario gets the call to ride.
2021 Sword Dancer Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Cross Border Race Odds: 4-1
A veteran seven-year-old with 35 lifetime starts, Cross Border has won 10 of those while putting just shy of $1 million in the bank.
He was a last-out winner of the (G2) Bowling Green Stakes at Saratoga, where he tracked just off the pace early before going to the front with 1/8 of a mile left in the 1 3/8 miles race and then opening up on the field to win by 1 1/4 lengths.
Trainer Mike Maker has a very good 21% win percentage at the current Saratoga meet. Luis Saez will be in the saddle.
2021 Sword Dancer Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Japan Race Odds: 9-2
The UK invader Japan ships over to make his North American debut to try and secure a spot in the $4 million BC Turf.
A two-time Group 3 winner in England and Ireland, in his last race he was all-out in the final furlong to get up and win by a nose racing 1 1/8 miles in the Green Room Meld Stakes at Leopardstown in Ireland.
While the forecast calls for clouds but no rain on Saturday at Saratoga, an off track would play to his advantage as he has won seven of 14 on turf courses rated wet.
The formidable UK team of Aiden O’Brien and Ryan Moore are trainer and jockey, respectively.
Here’s My 2021 Sword Dancer Stakes Free Pick.
The Sword Dancer is setting up to be a very good handicapping race and a case could be made for six of the seven here to get the win, including Channel Maker who is the defending race champ.
While I’ve always been a fan of Gufo, I’m going to play the horse-for-the-course angle and take Cross Border for the win. Despite the fact he’s 0-5 at the distance – with two runner up finishes – he’s also 4-for-5 on the Saratoga grass.
I think there will be a pretty solid early pace here, and he should be well positioned to sit just back of the leaders early and get first jump as they turn for home.
Gufo should be flying late, and I’ll put the two of them in the exacta box.
