2021 Pegasus World Cup Turf Handicapping
The turf companion to the Pegasus World Cup Stakes on dirt, the Pegasus Turf is open to horses age four and older, and they’ll race 1 3/16 miles on the Gulfstream Park grass.
For the third annual edition of the Pegasus Turf, the race has drawn a competitive field of 12 with no single strong favourite, making for a wide-open betting event.
Odds listed here are from Bovada’s racebook.
2021 Pegasus World Cup Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Colonel Liam Odds: 4-1
A lightly raced four-year-old colt, Colonel Liam has only five previous starts to his name, with three wins and third-place finish to show for it.
Last out he came from mid-pack to surge in the stretch and capture the Tropical Park Derby by 3 1/2 lengths on the Gulfstream turf. Prior to that he was fourth in the Saratoga Derby, a race where less than a length separated the top four finishers.
He’s one of three in the race for trainer Todd Pletcher. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. won the inaugural Pegasus Turf in 2019.
2021 Pegasus World Cup Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Largent Race Odds: 9-2
The second heavy hitter from the Pletcher barn, Largent sports a record of six wins and three second-place finishes in nine lifetime starts.
He made his graded-stakes racing debut just over a month ago, when he came from off the pace to win going away in the (G2) Fort Lauderdale Stakes at Gulfstream. That race was run at 1 1/8 miles, and so he stretches out in distance here.
As mentioned, Todd Pletcher trains. Gulfstream regular Paco Lopez gets the call to ride.
2021 Pegasus World Cup Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Anothertwistafate Race Odds: 5-1
After making his first eight career starts on the dirt, Anothertwistafate was switched to turf racing just at the close of 2020, and has made two consecutive starts at the Grade 2 level.
In the first of those, he set the early pace but eventually settled for a close-up fourth as the favourite in the Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar. Just over three weeks ago he stalked just off the pace before taking over to win by 2 1/4 lengths over a well-regarded rival in the San Gabriel Stakes at Santa Anita.
He’s trained by Peter Miller, Joel Rosario is the jock.
2021 Pegasus World Cup Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Social Paranoia Race Odds: 8-1
Well-bred five-year-old veteran Social Paranoia was away from the races ever since winning the (G3) Poker Stakes at Belmont Park in July. Five months later he came back to racing at Gulfstream and got ready for the Pegasus Turf with a 1/2 length win in an allowance-level race.
For his career he’s been in the money in 14 of 16 races, with five wins.
He’s the third Todd Pletcher runner in the race, with Luis Saez tapped to ride.
Here’s My 2021 Pegasus World Cup Turf Free Pick.
There’s a couple different ways to handicap this very even field, but what stands out to me is there is little early speed among the top contenders, with most liking to come from the back and do their best running late.
That said, even going 1 3/16 miles at Gulfstream I don’t mind playing the speed to win, and that lands me on Anothertwistafate. I think there’s a good chance he could get away with some fairly easy early fractions, leaving plenty in the tank to hold off the cavalry charge in the lane.
I’ll take him for the win, and since I wouldn’t be surprised with a photo finish, I’ll box him in the exacta with Largent.
