2021 Makers Mark Mile Stakes Handicapping
It’s somewhat rare to see Grade 1 stakes action on a Friday, but that’s exactly what is on schedule to kick off the weekend at Keeneland Race Course with the running of the (G1) Makers Mark Mile.
Open to horses age four and up, the Makers Mark is is run on the Keeneland turf, and with the largest margin of victory in race history only 2 1/4 lengths, it usually goes right down to the wire. For 2021 the race has drawn an excellent field of nine and should offer some great betting value.

2021 Makers Mark Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Raging Bull Race Odds: 7-2
A French-bred colt that has done all his racing in the US, Raging Bull has always been competitive with six wins and 12 in-the-money finishes in 17 lifetime starts. Included in those are a pair of Grade 1 wins, including the (G1) Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita last May.
The problem is that he hasn’t won in four starts since then and last out was a very disappointing tenth in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland last November. He was third in this race in 2020 and fourth in 2019.
The trainer is Chad Brown, jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. comes in from New York to ride.
2021 Makers Mark Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Hit The Road Race Odds: 4-1
Riding a four-race winning streak, Hit The Road was last seen winning the (G1) Frank Kilroe Mile by a neck over a very good field at Santa Anita just over one month ago. Prior to that he captured the (G3) Thunder Road Stakes, also at one mile on the SA turf.
Overall he has a record of six wins in nine lifetime starts as he tries racing outside of southern California for the first time in his career.
He’s trained by Dan Blecker, while Florent Geroux is tapped to ride.
2021 Makers Mark Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Ride A Comet Race Odds: 6-1
After starting his career racing on dirt, Ride A Comet showed vast improvement when switched to turf in mid-2018. He was away from the track for all of 2019, but came back in 2020 and reeled off three straight wins including the (G3) Tropical Turf Stakes at Gulfstream two starts back where he hit a career-best 117 Equibase speed figure.
After a bump at the start he never really got into the race last out when finishing seventh in the Kilroe Mile, three lengths back of Hit The Road.
Trainer Mark Casse and jockey Tyler Gaffalione teamed up to win this race last year.
2021 Makers Mark Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Get Smokin Race Odds: 8-1
Sired by 2011 race winner Get Stormy, Get Smokin comes in off a win in the (G3) Tampa Bay Stakes where he stalked just off a fairly fast pace before going to the lead and taking the win in a time that was only 1 second off the track record for 1 1/16 miles.
He has won two of his last three starts, but is also a bit win-shy, with only three total in his 12-race career to go along with three runner-up and two third-place finishes.
The trainer is Thomas Bush, Junior Alvarado will be in the irons.

This is a very competitive race and I expect there will be a fast pace early which could set up for one of several to close in the stretch.
Despite his solid record Raging Bull has been a bit of an underachiever in this particular race, as he was the beaten favourite in 2020 and the beaten co-favourite in 2019. Add to that the fact this will be his first start in five months and I’m going to look elsewhere.
I’m going to bet on the Casse/Gaffalione team to make it two straight in this race and play Ride A Comet for the win. Draw a line through his last and he’s been in good form and put in a very solid work on March 28 prepping for this race. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hit The Road on the lead by mid-stretch and will use him in the exacta.
