2021 Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes Handicapping
The feature on a loaded card of racing at Keeneland on Saturday afternoon, the (G1) Keeneland Turf Mile is a ‘Win And You’re In Event’ for the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Mile on November 6.
Open to horses age three and older, the race has drawn a full international field of 13 to duke it out over a flat mile on the Keeneland grass course.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2021 Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Order Of Australia Race Odds: 5-2
While his win record isn’t much to speak of, Irish bred Order Of Australia gets the nod as the pre-race favourite based on the top-notch company he has been keeping.
Second last out in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, that marked his third straight Group 1 start and seventh overall in France, the UK, Ireland and Hong Kong. He’s also the defending BC Mile champion, having won that race last year over this same Keeneland course.
Trainer Aiden O’Brien is a two-time race winner, jockey John Velazquez won in 2014.
2021 Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Ivar Race Odds: 9-2
Brazil bred Ivar comes in as the defending race champ after hitting the wire first last year when it was actually called the Shadwell Turf Mile.
Following that he ran fourth in the 2020 BC Mile and then went on a long layoff only coming back this past May to run sixth, but beaten only two lengths, in the (G1) Turf Classic at Churchill Downs. He has been away from the races again ever since that race, although he has been putting in steady works over the past couple of months.
Trainer Paulo Lobo and jockey Joe Talamo team up again to try and make it two straight wins.
2021 Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Somelikeithotbrown Race Odds: 4-1
Well-traveled Somelikeithotbrown will be making his seventh consecutive start at his seventh different track, and has been good lately with a win and a pair of runner-up finishes in his last three.
He came off a bit of a layoff last out to lead the (G3) Mint Million Stakes at Kentucky Downs until he was passed late and had to settle for the second place money. Prior to that he was second in the (G2) Wise Dan Stakes after picking up the win in the (G2) Dinner Party.
Trainer Michael Maker and jockey Jose Ortiz both look for their first Turf Mile win.
2021 Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Pixelate Race Odds: 13-2
The last-out winner of the Mint Million, Kentucky bred Pixelate is something of a one-mile specialist, having racked up a record of three wins, two seconds and two thirds in seven starts at the distance.
He was out of the money in his only previous Keeneland race, but was closing fast on the leaders and finished just a length behind the winner after a poor start. Overall he has six wins and 14 in-the-money finishes in 20 lifetime starts.
The trainer is Michael Stidham, 2018 race winner Tyler Gaffalione is in the irons.
Here’s My 2021 Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes Free Pick.
It can be argued that Order Of Australia is taking a significant step down in class here versus where he has been running most recently, and that alone could put him in good position to win. The fact he’s won at the track and distance also factors into handicapping strategy.
However, despite the competition it would be nice to see a couple more wins on his record, and given that he’s likely to be bet down from his pre-race odds, I’m going to take a shot to beat him. Coming up in class compared to his more recent is Pixelate, but I also think he’s a young-ish four-year-old that could just be hitting his best stride.
He offers a bit of value and I’ll take him for the win.
