2021 Holy Bull Stakes Handicapping
A fixture on the Gulfstream Park racing calendar for 25 years, the (G3) Holy Bull is now a qualifying race for the Kentucky Derby, with points awarded to the top four finishers on a 10-4-2-1 basis.
Open to horses aged three, the Holy Bull is run at 1 1/16 miles on the Gulfstream dirt track. For 2021, the race has drawn a wide-open field of nine that offers up some great betting value.

2021 Holy Bull Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Prime Factor Race Odds: 3-1
Although he only has one previous race to his name, Prime Factor looked good in that one, clearing the field by 8 3/4 lengths racing six furlongs at Gulfstream.
There has to be some question of the field he was facing, however, as neither the second or third place finisher has come back to win since that race in mid December. He prepped for the Holy Bull with a bullet five furlong workout last Saturday.
Trainer Todd Pletcher has won the Holy Bull twice before. Irad Ortiz Jr. will be in the irons.
2021 Holy Bull Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Amount Race Odds: 6-1
Another second-time starter from the Pletcher barn, Amount won his lifetime debut by more than five lengths going 7 furlongs at Gulfstream in late December.
Again very much like with Prime Factor, the two horses he beat haven’t come back to do much running, both finishing well up the track in their next start. Unlike that one, his works since that race haven’t been anything to write home about.
As mentioned, he’s a Todd Pletcher trainee. Jockey Luis Saez is slated to ride.
2021 Holy Bull Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Sitting On Go Race Odds: 5-1
A graded-stakes winner last September when he took the (G3) Iroquois Stakes at Churchill, Sitting On Go is by far the most experienced runner in the race.
Following the Iroquois he faced the very top of his cohort in the (G1) Breeder’s Cup Juvenile, where he was ninth. He closed out 2020 with a sixth place in the (G2) Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. He comes in fresh, having not raced since late November.
He’s trained by Dale Romans, while Corey Lanerie gets the riding assignment.
2021 Holy Bull Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Greatest Honour Race Odds: 5-2
A well-bred son of Tapit, Greatest Honour has never been out of the money in four lifetime starts, but only broke his maiden in the fourth of those. He got that win at the track and distance after overcoming a bump at the start to rally from way back. In doing so he popped off a big 104 Equibase speed rating.
Prior to that he had also come from way off the pace to just miss by a head in a maiden special weight event at Aqueduct, finishing 21 lengths ahead of the third-place runner.
The trainer is Shug McGaughhey. Jockey Jose Ortiz won the race in 2015.

While both Prime Factor and Amount seem to be quality colts, I have a hard time playing either one off of just the one lifetime start against questionable fields. It’s significant that Greatest Honour hit a 104 Equibase speed figure last out, 20 points better than any others in the field have managed. He’s a fair price at 5-2 to play for the win.
For Sitting On Go, this race represents a drop in class from what he was facing in the fall, and I’ll use him in the exacta.
