2021 Haskell Stakes Handicapping
A trio of heavyweights all looking for their first Grade 1 win are expected to go to the gate on Saturday at Monmouth Park for the running of the 2021 Haskell Stakes.
Open to horses age three, the Haskell is run at 1 1/8 miles on the Monmouth dirt track. In addition to a share of the million-dollar total purse, the Haskell winner will also receive an automatic fees-paid entry to the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Classic, to be run on November 6 at Del Mar Race Course.

2021 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Hot Rod Charlie Race Odds: 6-5
Third in the Kentucky Derby and then second in the Belmont Stakes, Hot Rod Charlie is looking to move up one more spot and add a coveted Grade 1 win to his resume.
He ran very well in both of his Triple Crown races, working through some traffic to gamely chase the leaders through the stretch in the Derby, and then set the early pace and battled with favourite Essential Quality all through the lane before settling for second by just over 1 length in the Belmont.
Both trainer Doug O’Neill and jockey Flavian Prat go for their first Haskell win.
2021 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mandaloun Race Odds: 7-2
While the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission continues to drag out it’s decision on whether or not to disqualify Derby winner Medina Spirit following a failed drug test, Mandaloun is still officially the runner-up of that race.
In the meantime, he’s gone back to the track and comes into the Haskell off a last-out victory at Monmouth after getting up just in time to take the win by a neck in the Pegasus Stakes. That was run at 1 1/16 miles, so he gets a bit more distance to work with here.
The trainer is Brad Cox and Florent Geroux gets the call to ride.
2021 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Following Sea Race Odds: 3-1
Not raced in 2020 as a two-year-old, Following Sea has made three starts at three different tracks so far this season and has a pair of wins to show for it.
He was an easy winner over a small field last out at the allowance level racing at Belmont Park, winning by more than six lengths in a 6 1/2 furlong race where they blazed through the first 3/4 miles in a very fast 1:08.82.
He steps into much deeper waters here, making both a big stretch out in distance and step up in class.
Trainer Todd Pletcher has won the Haskell three times, jockey Joel Rosario goes for his first.
2021 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Midnight Bourbon Race Odds: 9-2
With two wins and eight in-the-money finishes in nine lifetime races, the only time Midnight Bourbon has failed to crack the top three in his career was when he ran sixth in the Kentucky Derby. There he had to deal with a lot of traffic issues and was forced four-wide on both turns.
He came back from that to run very well and grab the runner-up money in the Preakness Stakes where he took the lead in mid-stretch only to be passed late by the hard-charging Rombauer.
Trainer Steve Asmussen won the Haskell in 2009, jockey Paco Lopez will be in the irons.

In my opinion the best prep race leading to the Kentucky Derby was the (G2) Louisiana Derby, and with three of the four top picks here coming out of that race – winner Hot Rod Charlie, runner-up Midnight Bourbon, and sixth-place finisher Mandaloun – I expect another great race on Saturday in the Haskell.
Hot Rod Charlie was my pick for both the Derby and Preakness, and I’ll stick with him for the win here and hope the odds drift up a bit. Midnight Bourbon offers good value at 9-2 and I’ll use him in the exacta.
