2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Handicapping
Race 2 on Breeders’ Cup Saturday is the Turf Sprint, to be run at 5 furlongs in the Del Mar Turf course.
What is significant statistically with the Turf Sprint is that not only has the distance varied over the years, in the (many) years the race was run at Santa Anita the race is on a downhill course. Horses that win there have tended to be specialist on that course, and have produced a number of post-time favourite winners.
Remove those races from the equation, and the average winning price of the Turf Sprint is a very juicy 12-1. It’s also should be noted that last year Glass Slippers became only the first European-based horse to win in 13 tries in this race.

2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Golden Pal Race Odds: 5-2
The winner of last year’s BC Juvenile Turf Sprint, Golden Pal comes into this race trying to pull off the same trick in open-age company. That race was run at 5 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland.
He arrives off a win in the (G2) Woodford Stakes, also at 5 1/2 furlongs and also at Keeneland. He’s the main speed here, so expect him to go right to the front and try to run them off their feet.
He’s trained by Wesley Ward, and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. was also in the saddle when he won the Juvenile Turf Sprint last year.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: A Case Of You Race Odds: 8-1
A last out winner of a major Group 1 race in France, Irish-bred A Case Of You has won exactly half of his 10 lifetime races and will be making his North American debut in this one.
While most of his races have been at 6 or 7 furlongs, he does have that last win and a runner-up finish just prior to that at this distance. For him the question might be the ground, as he has never run on a turf course as firm as he’ll be getting at Del Mar.
The trainer is Adrian McGuinness, the jockey is Ronan Whelan.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Lieutenant Dan Race Odds: 9-1
While he made most of his money racing against state-breds in California, Lieutenant Dan has shown this year that he can be pretty good in open company as well. He’s won three straight of those this year, including a last out in the G2 Eddie D at Santa Anita.
He is a perfect three-for-three at the distance, and two-for-two at Del Mar. After starting his career going back-and-forth between dirt and turf tracks, he’s now ran five consecutive turf races, winning four of them.
The trainer is Steve Miyadi, Giovanni Franco rides.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Arrest Me Red Race Odds: 10-1
The three-year-old Arrest Me Red only has six career starts to his name, and while he did have a couple of wins prior to a trainer change two starts back, he seems to be a much faster horse since then.
He’s won two straight races for the new connections, including last out when he went wire-to-wire to win the (G3) Belmont Sprint Invitational in his first try against older horses. He’ll have to keep moving forward to win here, but he’s going in the right direction.
The above mentioned new trainer is Wesley Ward. Veteran jock John Velazquez picks up the mount.
Here’s My 2021 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Free Pick.
Of all the pre-race favourites at this year’s BC, my sense is that Golden Pal may be the most vulnerable in this fairly wide-open field, and I’m going to try and beat him at a big price.
As mentioned earlier, taking away the results when this race is run on the downhill course at Santa Anita, the average winning price is in double digits and I’m going to take a double-digit shot with Arrest Me Red. While it’s true he’ll be taking on the toughest field of his career, he looks like a horse that can get into the mix and then adjust to any pace scenario and could be sitting in a big effort.
