2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf Handicapping
The penultimate event of the 2021 Breeders’ Cup is the Turf, where they’ll be racing a gruelling 1 1/2 miles on the Del Mar grass.
Since the expansion of the Breeders’ Cup to a two-day event, European horses have dominated the Turf, winning 10 of 14 races. Also in that time period only three favourites have won the race, with the average winning odds being 6-1.

2021 Breeders’ Cup Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Tarnawa Race Odds: 27-20
The defending race champ, Tarnawa trailed most of the field through most of last year’s race before swinging wide off the turn and roaring to the finish to win by a length.
She’s been a close-up second in each of her last two, and those just happen to be the best races her native Ireland, as well as France, have to offer. Her running style leaves her vulnerable to traffic problems, but a repeat of last year’s performance isn’t out of the question.
The trainer is Dermont Weld, Colin Keane will be in the irons.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Walton Street Race Odds: 8-1
No horse older than five has ever won the Turf, and UK-bred Walton Street is now seven. However, his recent form indicates he has a legitimate shot at making history.
He shipped over to North America early and scored a confidence-building win in the (G1) Canadian International at Woodbine going this 1 1/2 miles distance. Prior to that he was third in a Grade 1 race in Germany where both the first and second place finishers came back to win major European stakes.
Charlie Appleby is the trainer, James Doyle rides.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Sisfahan Race Odds: 12-1
A French-bred colt that races in Germany, Sisfahan has been taking on top level competition from all over Europe and has yet to finish out of the money in six lifetime starts.
He was second in his lifetime debut on a fast all-weather surface, so firm ground at Del Mar shouldn’t be an issue. However, like the favourite here his late-running style does leave him vulnerable to traffic issues.
He’s trained by Henk Grewe, the rider is Cristian Demuro.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Gufo Race Odds: 12-1
The winner of the (G1) Sword Dancer at this distance two starts back, Gufo then had a rough start last out and had to rush up to get into contention, eventually settling for third in the (G1) Turf Classic.
For his career he has never finished out of the money in 15 starts, including 7 wins. He’s two for three at the distance, but ran third in his only try in the Del Mar turf.
He’s trained by Christophe Clement, Joel Rosario is the jock.

While I had Tarnawa last year and she came through for me – and she certainly is good enough to win this again – I don’t like her so much at low odds and am going to look elsewhere.
At least once on Breeders’ Cup weekend you have to try and hit a bomb and so my pick is going to be Sisfahan. I think he’ll be under the radar here due to the fact he does his racing in Germany, but as mentioned earlier he’s faced some very tough competition that should set him up well for this field.
