2021 Breeders’ Cup Mile Handicapping
For many horse racing fans, the flat mile on the grass is their favourite type of race, and so the BC Mile always draws a lot of betting interest. It goes as the sixth BC race on Saturday and has drawn a full field of 14.
Over the past 14 years favourites have done quite well in the Mile, winning 46% of the time and thus producing a fairly low average odds payout of between 3-1 and 4-1. It’s interesting to note that 9 of the past 14 winners have broken from the outside half of the gate.
The mile configuration at Del Mar, however, makes for a short run into the first turn, so that angle should be viewed with some caution here.

2021 Breeders’ Cup Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Space Blues Race Odds: 9-4
Versatile Irish-bred Space Blues has raced and won in four different countries over his career and makes his North American debut at this year’s Mile.
He has won 10 of his 18 starts so far on surfaces rated from firm to heavy, and last out won the (G1) Prix de la Foret by a widening two lengths. Prior to that he was the winner of Group 2 City of York Stakes, a race where the third-place runner came back to win his next start.
Charlie Appleby is the trainer, regular rider William Buick will be in the saddle once again.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Mo Forza Race Odds: 11-2
The top US based contender, Mo Forza has won eight of his last nine starts and sports an overall record of eight wins and 12 in-the-money finishes in 14 career races.
In addition to that, he has won six of eight tries at the distance and ran second in one other. He has been first or second in five of six tries at Del Mar, and two starts back won on the course and at the distance in taking the (G2) Del Mar Mile.
Peter Miller trains, Flavien Prat is tapped to ride.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Blowout Race Odds: 12-1
A bit of an under-the-radar type, the UK-bred but US-raced Blowout has been very good over the past year with two wins and three runner-up efforts in graded-stakes races going back to last September.
He made a big breakthrough last out when he took the field wire-to-wire to win the (G1) First Lady Stakes at Keeneland. He has been first or second in eight of nine tries at the distance. That said, he’s a a horse that seems to need the lead, and will have to overcome a tough post position draw.
In 2019 trainer Chad Brown and jockey Joel Rosario teamed up to win this race with Uni, another horse that was UK bred but did most of her running in the US.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Smooth Like Straight Race Odds: 12-1
On paper it looks like Blowout and Smooth Like Straight represent the most early speed in the race, and with the latter breaking from an outside position and this one coming from post #2, he could easily find himself on an uncontested lead around the first turn.
While he only has one win in six tries this year, he gave Mo Forza all he could handle both of his last two, and his three straight second-place finishes have been by 1/2 length, a head and a neck.
Michael McCarthy is the trainer, jockey Umberto Rispoli will ride for the 10th consecutive time.
Here’s My 2021 Breeders’ Cup Mile Free Pick.
From top to bottom this is perhaps the best overall field of the entire Breeders’ Cup weekend, as evidenced by the fact that no less than seven of the 14 have won more than $1 million dollars in their career, and couple others are only a few thousand short of that mark.
You also have horses that can win on the lead, from mid-pack or rallying from way off the pace. It all adds up to a real handicapping challenge. That said, I’m going to be mindful of the solid record of favourites and bet Space Blues for the win.
