2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Handicapping
The 2021 Breeders’ Cup World Championships kicks off the first of 14 BC races over two days on Friday with the (G2) Juvenile Turf Sprint. The race is run at 5 furlongs, going around one turn on the Del Mar turf course, and is open to horses age two.
The most recent addition to the BC lineup, the Juvenile Turf Sprint has only been run on three previous occasions. All three previous winners were either the first or second choice in the betting. Perhaps more significantly, all three won in wire-to-wire fashion, so early speed is an obvious handicapping factor.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Averly Jane Race Odds: 5-2
An easy, open-lengths winner in all four of her previous lifetime starts, Averly Jane started her career racing in dirt, but switched to turf for her last and won the Indian Summer Stakes by three lengths.
She has lots of early speed, having never been worse than second at anytime in her previous races, winning the last two by leading throughout. If there’s any question about her, it might be that she hasn’t yet faced this class of competition.
Trainer Wesley Ward has won the past two Juvenile Turf Sprint races. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione has been in the saddle for her past three wins.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Twilight Gleaming Race Odds: 7-2
Irish-bred Twilight Gleaming started her career with two races in the US, winning the second of those on the Belmont Park grass by more than seven lengths over a filly that came back to win her next start.
Since most sprint races overseas are run on a straight course, that Belmont win is significant in that it shows she’s a rare European-based sprinter with experience handling a turn. She followed up that effort by running second in the Group 1 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, then won a stakes race in France.
She’s also a Wesley Ward trainee, while jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. goes for his third consecutive Juvenile Turf Sprint win.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Twilight Jet Race Odds: 9-1
Another Irish-bred – although unrelated to Twilight Gleaming – Twilight Jet has already made 10 starts in his career, making him by far the most experienced runner in the field.
He has been keeping good company as well, as eight of those races were in Group events, and he comes in off a win in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket. While he drew the advantageous inside post, he doesn’t have quite the early speed as the top two here, and will be negotiating a turn for the first time in his career.
The trainer is Michael O’Callaghan, Leigh Roche is the rider.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Hierarchy Race Odds: 14-1
Yet another Irish bred, Hierarchy has made four lifetime starts in the UK and has never been out of the money with two wins, a second and a third.
He broke his maiden on first asking at Wolverhampton going six furlongs around a turn, so that shouldn’t be a factor for him here. He broke a bit slow last out but still managed to get into contention and was only beaten by a head in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes.
Hugo Palmer trains, Oisin Murphy gets the call to ride.
Here’s My 2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Free Pick.
Going a short 5 furlongs in the grass, this race will be over in a blink of an eye, and it’s not surprising that it has so far been won by the horse that gets to the front first.
While US-based horses have won all three races so far, I think this year that streak will end, and I’m going to play Twilight Gleaming for the win. Between the top two, I think she has done well against much tougher competition than the favourite, and I think that will be the difference here.
Longshot pick: Hierarchy
