2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Handicapping
Closing out Day 1 in the 2021 Breeders’ Cup, the (G1) Juvenile Turf is the final race restricted to two-year-olds in the Championship. The race has drawn a full field of 14 to go one mile on the Del Mar turf course.
Last year Fire At Will won this race at odds of 30-1, but historically the winner is in the 6-1 to 7-1 range. There’s a short run to the first turn at the one mile distance on the Del Mar turf, so there’s some advantage to being in an inside post.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Modern Games Race Odds: 11-4
Irish invader Modern Games has won his past two races and three of his last four and ran second by less than a length in the race he didn’t win. The most recent of those victories came in the Group 3 Somerville Stakes at Newmarket.
He has the inside post and the early speed to be forwardly placed when they hit that first turn. But to that end, his last four races have all been run on straight courses, and all have been run at 7 furlongs.
Trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick were the winning connection of this race in 2018.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Albahr Race Odds: 5-1
Breaking from the gate from just next to the favourite, UK-bred Albahr comes into the race on a four-race winning streak, the last of those in the G1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine where he beat a horse that came back to win his next start.
Like Modern Games he has good early speed to get into contention, but there is some argument to be made that one has been facing and beating much tougher competition in Europe.
He’s another Charlie Appleby trainee, Frankie Detorri gets the ride.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Slipstream Race Odds: 16-1
New York-based Slipstream took three tries to get his maiden win, but showed improvement with every effort and followed that victory by taking the (G3) Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park.
In that one he had some problems settling early and then came from way off the pace to get up and win by a length going 7 furlongs. Like others in here he’s trying the mile for the first time and could be flying late in the stretch.
Trainer Christophe Clement and jockey Joel Rosario both go for their first Juvenile Turf win.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Dakota Gold Race Odds: 14-1
Lightly raced Dakota Gold has only been in two races but has won them both by open lengths, the second of those coming at this one-mile distance in a lower-level stake at Monmouth Park.
He’s definitely taking a step up in class here for his third lifetime start, but his previous speed figures put him in the mix and like Slipstream he could be doing his best running as the make the turn for home.
For trainer Danny Gargan this is his first ever BC starter. Luis Saez will be in the irons.
Here’s My 2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Free Pick.
This is a very competitive race with a good mix of quality US-based horses and Euro invaders and should offer some good prices on several legitimate contenders.
For me it comes down to recent class and form and I’ll be taking Modern Games for the win at what is a decent price on a favourite. He should be in contention from the start and has also shown some versatility to track the pace. It will all come down to how he handles two-turn racing.
Longshot pick: Slipstream
