2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Handicapping
With the winner typically pegged as the future bet favourite for the Kentucky Derby the following May, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is always one of the most anticipated races of BC weekend. The Juvenile goes 1 1/16 miles on the Del Mar dirt.
Particularly in Breeders’ Cup events held in California, the Juvenile has produced some fairly big longshot winners including 46-1 Storm The Court in 2019. Similar to what occurs in the Derby, getting a good early position is usually key to getting the win.

2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Free Pick & Handicapping: Jack Christopher Race Odds: 6-4
The only horse in the race to top a 100 speed figure, Jack Christopher did that in his last effort when winning the (G1) Champagne Stakes at Belmont. Prior to that he broke his maiden at first asking ahead of a runner that came back to win his next start.
What will be interesting to see is if he can rate off what should be a fairly quick pace up front and avoid getting caught up in an early speed duel. He’ll also be trying two-turn racing for the first time.
Trainer Chad Brown and jockey Jose Ortiz teamed up to win the Juvenile in 2017.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Free Pick & Handicapping: Corniche Race Odds: 11-4
With two consecutive front-running wins to his name, Corniche is expected to be one of those setting the early pace here, but to that end he didn’t have any luck in drawing the far outside post.
Still, he has one win at the track and a second win in the (G1) American Pharoah Stakes at the distance and so if he can overcome his post position there are a couple real positives in his favour.
Trainer Bob Baffert has four previous Juvenile wins, while jockey Mike Smith has two.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Free Pick & Handicapping: Commandperformance Race Odds: 6-1
In 2017 Good Magic made the Juvenile his first career win and this year Commandperformance will be trying to become the second as he has two runner-up finishes in two career starts.
The second of those came in the Champagne where he got a bit wide in the turn and then couldn’t get to Jack Christopher, settling for the Place money by 2 3/4 lengths.
Todd Pletcher has been the Juvenile winning trainer twice before. Irad Ortiz Jr. will be in the irons.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Free Pick & Handicapping: Pinehurst Race Odds: 7-1
A stablemate to Corniche, Pinehurst also represents the big speed in the race, and with that one having to come from way outside he may just find himself alone on the lead as they head for the first turn.
While he has yet to race beyond 7 furlongs, it is worth noting that both of his starts and wins have come on the Del Mar dirt.
He’s the second Bob Baffert trainee in the field. The winning jockey from 2010, John Velazquez, picks up the mount.

Since winning his debut the connections of Jack Christopher have pointed to this race and made a tactical move last out in the Champagne when the jockey took him back to sit off the pace before making his move at the mid-point of the race.
I think that experience will serve him well here and we’ll see a very similar type of race. I’m going to bet him for the win and hope a couple of the other contenders attract enough interest for the odds to drift up a bit.
