2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Handicapping
The second race of Day 1 at the 2021 Breeders’ Cup sees the top two-year-old females taking to the track for the (G1) Juvenile Fillies. The race is run at 1 1/16 miles on the Del Mar dirt track.
A heavy favourite in the field has scared away a lot of the competition and the race will go with a small field of only six starters. For many years favourites were most likely to prevail in this race – however, the favourite has failed to win the past five years. Having a Grade 1 win on your resume has been a key handicapping angle.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Free Pick & Handicapping: Echo Zulu Race Odds: 10-11
The one to beat, the ultra-consistent Echo Zulu is a perfect three-for-three in her career and has hit a speed figure of at least 90 in all three, the only filly in the race to achieve that number so far.
She also ticks the box as a two-time Grade 1 winner. This will be her first try beyond one mile, and her first time going around two turns. This will also be her first time racing outside of New York, so she does have something to prove.
Trainer Steve Asmussen won this race in 2011, while jockey Joel Rosario has won two of the last three.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Free Pick & Handicapping: Hidden Connection Race Odds: 3-1
Just coming to the races this past August, Hidden Connection has only run twice but has dominated in both, winning by a combined 17 lengths. The most recent of those was a win in the (G3) Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs.
That race was run at this distance and around two turns at Churchill, so she does have that experience edge to draw on when compared to the favourite. She can sit just off the pace and hope the speed comes back to her.
Trainer Brett Calhoun and jockey Reylu Gutierrez both go for their first Juvenile Fillies win.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Free Pick & Handicapping: Juju’s Map Race Odds: 3-1
A last out winner of the (G1) Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland, Juju’s Map fits the profile of recent winners and like Hidden Connection has shown she can handle the distance she’ll be trying here.
She has shown signs of improvement every time out speed wise, and seems to be in top form after posting a bullet workout last week with the best time of 42 going five furlongs while training at Churchill Downs.
Trainer Brad Cox saddled the race winner in 2019, jockey Florent Geroux will be in the irons.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Free Pick & Handicapping: Tarabi Race Odds: 12-1
An easy winner of her first lifetime start, Tarabi then stepped up to take on Echo Zulu in the (G1) Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga. She didn’t run a bad race there, but could only mange a second-place finish, beaten four lengths.
She has put in a trio of good works lately leading up to this, but will be making her first start in two months.
Cherie Devereaux tries for her first first Breeders’ Cup win as trainer. Jockey Javier Castellano is a two-time winner of the Juvenile Fillies
Here’s My 2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Free Pick.
While it’s not exciting to be backing a short-priced favourite, the idea is to pick the winner and on paper that means going with Echo Zulu.
While she will face a couple challenges as noted above, she doesn’t have to run any faster than she has previously to hit the wire first, while all the others in here will have to improve to catch her.
Longshot pick: Juju’s Map
