2021 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Handicapping
A tough test of speed and stamina, the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf is run at a distance of 1 3/8 miles on the Del Mar turf course. It goes as race #4 on Saturday and has drawn an international filed of 12 entries.
Since the Breeders’ Cup expanded to a two-day event 14 years ago, only one favourite has won the race, and the average winning odds are just under 9-1. European and North American horses have just about split the winnings.
While 11 of 14 winners had a Grade 1 or Group 1 win to their name coming in, it’s interesting to note 8 of 14 winners had been beaten in their previous start.

2021 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: War Like Goddess Race Odds: 13-4
Coming in with four consecutive wins and the winner of six-of-seven lifetime, War Like Goddess is also something of a specialist at the distance, having won all three of her starts at 1 3/8 miles.
Typically she closes from way back in the field, often launching her run to the wire by going five or six wide in the field. Last out she was much closer to the early pace than usual when taking the (G1) Flower Bowl Invitational, so it will be interesting to see if they stick to that strategy here.
Trainer Bill Mott had the third-place runner in this race last year. Jockey Julien Leparoux won way back in 2008.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Love Odds: 7-2
Not only has the Irish-bred Love been spending her time racing at the highest level across the pond – making eight straight starts at the Group 1 level – she’s also been battling some of the best male turf runners in those races.
While this will be here first time going 1 3/8 miles, she does have wins at the slightly longer 1 1/2. She is also a Euro-bred who seems to handle firm footing very well, and that could play to her advantage at Del Mar.
Trainer Aiden O’Brien looks for his first Filly and Mare Turf win, jockey Ryan Moore won in 2013.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Going To Vegas Race Odds: 12-1
Southern California based Going To Vegas has been on a roll lately, winning all three of her last races including the (G1) Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita.
Prior to that she won two straight at Del Mar to run her record to six in-the-money finishes in seven starts at the track. While that kind of success is always a strong handicapping angle, she has yet to face this level of competition and yet to race beyond 1 1/4 miles.
Richard Baltas is the trainer, Umberto Rispoli is the rider.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Audarya Race Odds: 6-1
While it’s difficult to compare last year’s race to this one due to the fact it was run at the much shorter 1 3/16 miles, defending champion Audarya came flying from the back to win and may actually benefit from the added distance here.
Her record of 0-4 so far this year is underwhelming, but she was close up in three of those, and they were run on surfaces rated soft and heavy while she is another Euro that seems to prefer firmer ground.
Trainer James Fanshawe goes for his second consecutive win, jockey William Buick was the winning rider in 2017.
Here’s My 2021 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Free Pick.
As mentioned off the top, European and North American horses have been splitting the winnings in this race over the past two years, but the sense here is that the Europeans will be making it two in a row on Saturday.
Although she has gone three races without a win, it could be argued that Love is actually taking a step down in class in this field compared to some of those she has been facing across the pond, and she’s my pick for the win.
Long shot: Going To Vegas
