2021 Breeders’ Cup Distaff Handicapping
For the seventh of nine Breeders’ Cup races on Saturday at Del Mar, some of the best female racehorses in the world take to the track for the BC Distaff. Open to fillies and mares age three and older, the Distaff is run at 1 1/8 miles on the Del Mar dirt.
Over the past 14 years, the favourite has won the Distaff six times, and five other times the winner was second or third in the betting when the gates flew open. Not surprisingly then, the average winning odds in that span is only 3-1.
Thirteen of the past 14 winners had a Grade 1 win to their name, and horses that have run the race before tend to do well the second time around.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Letruska Race Odds: 6-4
Very fast and very consistent, Letruska comes into this with wins in five straight races. In all five of those she scored a plus-100 speed figure and in all five she led wire-to-wire. The last three of those were at this 1 1/8 miles distance.
She will have to contend with a couple of others with lots of early speed in here, and she will be making her first lifetime start at Del Mar.
She’s trained by Fausto Guiterrez, regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr. will be in the irons.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Malathaat Race Odds: 9-2
A three-year-old taking on older rivals for the first time, Malathaat has six wins and one second-place finish in her career so far. Three of those wins have come at the G1 level, including the Kentucky Oaks back in May.
Last out in the (G1) Alabama she overcame a stumble at the start that left her second-last out of the gate, but she still managed to get up and win by 1 1/2 lengths over a filly that came back to win her next start and who she’ll be meeting again here.
Both trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez have two previous Distaff wins to their name.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Shedaresthedevil Race Odds: 6-1
The winner of the 2020 Kentucky Oaks and two other Grade 1 races, Shedaresthedevil sports a record of nine wins and 15 in-the-money finishes in 16 lifetime starts.
Last out she went wire-to-wire to win the (G3) Locust Grove Stakes at Churchill Downs. While she did win the Oaks going 1 1/8 miles, it may not be her preferred distance as she’s only tried it twice and ran gave up the lead and ran third the other time.
Trainer Brad Cox won this race two of the past three years with superstar Monomoy Girl. Florent Geroux was the winning rider both times.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Royal Flag Race Odds: 13-2
While she doesn’t hold a Grade 1 title like several others in here, you can’t knock Royal Flag’s effort in any of her races, as she been in the money in every one of her 12 lifetime starts with six wins.
She’s a mid-pack runner who seems to always find a way to get through traffic and into contention. If the front runners want to slug it out and we see a pace meltdown, she’s a likely candidate to be picking up the pieces.
Trainer Chad Brown and jockey Joel Rosario both go for their first Distaff win.
Here’s My 2021 Breeders’ Cup Distaff Free Pick.
As mentioned previously, Letruska has hit a plus-100 Beyer speed figure in each of her last five races. And while I’m not someone who handicaps strictly by speed figures, for me one of the most glaring statistics in all the BC races this weekend is that no other horse in the race has hit 100 more than once. And there’s only one of those.
In other words, all she has to do is run her normal race and she beats this field, so I’m picking her for the win.
