2021 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Handicapping
Not a sprint but not a route race, the Dirt Mile is one of the quirkier races at the Breeders’ Cup and is set to go as the third race on Saturday. The race features a heavy favourite and has attracted a fairly short field of eight.
Over 14 runnings of the Dirt Mile, the favourite has only won three times, with an average winning payout just shy of 7-1. Perhaps more significantly, more winners have come from horses that are cutting back from longer distances than sprinters trying to stretch out.

2021 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Life Is Good Race Odds: 2-3
On paper Life Is Good is clearly the one to beat and this is reflected in his short pre-race odds. He has won four of his five lifetime starts, and his only loss was by a neck to Jackie’s Warrior, who happens to be the odds-on favourite in the BC Sprint later in the day.
Earlier this year he beat eventual Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit not once but twice, and would have been a solid favourite for the Derby himself if not for some injury problems. He’s two-for-two at the distance, and won his only start at Del Mar.
Trainer Todd Pletcher has won many BC races but tries for his first Dirt Mile. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. won in 2019.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Silver State Odds: 33-10
One of the more versatile runners you’ll find, Silver State has wins at distances ranging from 7 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. He’s also put almost $2 million in the bank on the strength of seven wins and 12 in-the-money finishes from 13 lifetime starts.
He has wins at both the Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels so far this year. If there’s any knock against him it’s that even though those were top level races, they may not have really featured top-level fields.
Trainer Steve Asmussen won this race in 2012. Ricardo Santana Jr. gets the call to ride.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Ginobli Race Odds: 5-1
Over the past 18 months Ginobli has made six starts in the claiming ranks – way below this level of racing – and didn’t really do too well in those with no wins to show for it.
So perhaps there’s something he likes in the Del Mar air, because in his last two starts at the track he has been a completely different horse. He won them both, including the (G2) Pat O’Brien Stakes over very good field, improving his previous best speed figure by 14 points.
He’s trained by Richard Baltas, Drayden Van Dyke gets the riding assignment.
2021 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Eight Rings Race Odds: 12-1
Once considered a rising star and perhaps even a Kentucky Derby contender, Eight Rings kind of fell off the map after an sixth-place run in the 2019 BC Juvenile.
Following that he went winless in his next five starts – although he just missed the (G1) Bing Crosby in July by a neck – before breaking through last out with an easy four-length win in the optional claiming ranks.
He cuts back in distance here from that last race which could be of some benefit.
He’s trained by Bob Baffert, JJ Hernandez will be in the irons.
Here’s My 2021 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Free Pick.
While there are some decent horses in here with significant wins to their name, none of them are named Jackie’s Warrior, and I don’t think Life Is Good will have too much trouble handling this field.
I expect him to go to the front out of the gate and never look back, so even at the short price he’s the pick for the win and I’ll try to find some value in the exacta.
Long shot: Eight Rings
