2021 Bowling Green Stakes Handicapping
The third of three graded-stakes races on the Saturday schedule at Saratoga, the (G2) Bowling Green Stakes is open to horses age four and older and is run over 1 3/8 miles on the Saratoga turf course.
The 2021 Bowling Green has drawn an excellent and very competitive field of eight, with six of those listed at 8-1 or less in the morning line odds, including the past three previous race winners.
Odds listed here are provided by the Saratoga track handicapper.
2021 Bowling Green Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Channel Maker Race Odds: 5-2
The slight morning line favourite, Channel Maker was a dead-heat winner of the Bowling Green in 2018, finished fourth in 2019 and was placed third through a disqualification to the winner in 2020.
A seven-year-old Ontario bred, he has put more than $3 million in the bank in his 39-race career with seven wins, including a pair of Grade 1 wins last year. After running third by just one length in the (G1) 2020 Breeders’ Cup turf, he was taken over to the Mid East to start 2021 for races in the United Arab Emirates and Dubai, running second in the first of those and eighth in the second.
Trainer Bill Mott has won the Bowling Green on four previous occasions. Manny Franco is the jock.
2021 Bowling Green Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Moon Over Miami Race Odds: 7-2
Despite not having any wins to show for it, Moon Over Miami has been very good in three starts at the graded-stakes level in 2021, with a second and two thirds in that span.
Last out he just missed by a neck in the (G1) Man O’ War Stakes at Belmont Park after running second by 2 1/2 in the (G2) Pan American Stakes at Gulfstream Park. One of two four-year-olds in the race, he’s an improving colt that can take another step forward here.
He’s the second of three Bill Mott trainees in the field, Junior Alvarado is tapped to ride.
2021 Bowling Green Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Cross Border Race Odds: 9-2
New York-bred Cross Border ran second in the Bowling Green last year, but was placed first when the race winner was disqualified for interference in the stretch drive.
He’s been winless in eight starts since then, although he did run second or third in six of those. He is a perfect two-for-two at the 1 3/8 miles distance, and could be considered something of a horse for the course as he has three wins and one runner-up finish in four starts on the Saratoga grass.
The trainer is Mike Maker, while 2019 race winner Luis Saez will ride.
2021 Bowling Green Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Channel Cat Race Odds: 5-1
The wire-to-wire winner of the (G1) Man O’ War Stakes at Belmont two starts back, Channel Cat has put $1.3 million in the bank on the strength of six wins and 14 in-the-money finishes in his 27-race career.
The race winner in 2019, he has been very good on both firm and good turf surfaces, with three of his six wins coming on off tracks. He has also finished in the money in all four races of his 1 3/8 mile races with two wins at the distance.
Jack Sisterson is the trainer, veteran jockey John Velazquez has two previous Bowling Green wins.
Here’s My 2021 Bowling Green Stakes Free Pick.
It’s somewhat rare to see the three previous winners of a race face each other once again in that race and so having that aspect at play here makes this a very interesting handicapping challenge.
Wins at the track and distance is always a key handicapping angle, and I think it comes into play even more when talking about races over longer distances. With that in mind I’m going to key on Channel Cat and Cross Border here and lean on their past success both at the distance and on the Saratoga grass.
I think the former has had the better form lately, so I’ll play Channel Cat for the win and use Cross Border in the exacta box.
