2020 Woodbine Mile Stakes Handicapping
One of the most significant one-mile turf races in the world is set to go this Saturday at Woodbine with the running of the Woodbine Mile Stakes.
A ‘Win And You’re In’ event for the Breeders’ Cup Mile on November 7, past winners of the Woodbine Mile include World Approval, who won the 2017 race and then went on to capture the BC Mile, and two-time winner Wise Dan, who also won the BC Mile in 2012 and 2013.
Open to horses aged three and older, the race has drawn a strong field of eight starters, including several multiple graded-stakes winners.
Odds listed here are provided by Bovada’s racebook.
2020 Woodbine Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: War Of Will Race Odds: 3-1
The 2019 (G1) Preakness Stakes winner, the connections for War Of Will are remaking him into a turf runner as he moves into the second phase of his career. He in fact started racing as a two-year-old in turf races before his talent led him to the Triple Crown trail on dirt.
He opened 2020 with a sixth-place finish in the Shoemaker Mile on the Santa Anita turf in May, and then took a big step forward in winning the (G1) Maker’s Mark Mile on the Keeneland turf in July.
He’s one of three in the race for trainer Mark Casse, the jockey is Rafael Hernandez.
2020 Woodbine Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: March To The Arch Race Odds: 3-1
Florida-bred March To The Arch comes into the race off a win going one-mile on the Woodbine turf when he took the (G2) King Edward Stakes in a final time just a half-second off the track record held by Wise Dan.
He faces a tougher field here than he did in that one, but he’s had a lot of success on the Woodbine grass, with three wins and a runner-up finish in four lifetime starts on the turf at Woodbine.
He’s the other big contender from the Casse barn, while veteran jockey Patrick Husbands won the Mile back in 2001.
2020 Woodbine Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Shirl’s Speight Odds: 4-1
An intriguing option in this field, the lightly raced Shirl’s Speight is so far undefeated in two lifetime starts, and was actually slated to run in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago until a slight fever led to him being scratched just a couple days before the race.
He broke his maiden at first asking by going wire-to-wire to score an eight-length win on the Woodbine turf in July, beating recent Queen’s Plate runner-up Belichick by more than 10 lengths. He followed that up with a 2 3/4 length win in the (G3) Marine Stakes on the Woodbine all-weather track.
Trainer Roger Attfield looks for his third Mile win, jockey Kazushi Kimura tries for his first.
2020 Woodbine Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Starship Jubilee Race Odds: 5-1
Seven-year-old Florida-bred mare Starship Jubilee rarely runs a bad race, having won four-of-five starts in 2020, and having finished in the money in 11 of her last 12, with seven wins in that span.
Included in those are a pair of wins and a pair of runner-up finishes in Grade 1 and 2 stakes on the Woodbine turf, but here she’ll be taking on males for the first time in her 37-race career.
Both trainer Kevin Attard and jockey Justin Stein are going for their first Woodbine Mile win.
Here’s My 2020 Woodbine Mile Stakes Free Pick.
There’s not a lot to separate the top two contenders here, and we could very well see a Casse exacta. Although Bovada has them even in the advance odds, I suspect War Of Will will go off as the favourite at race time, and that being the case I’ll take March To The Arch for the win and hope to get a bit more value.
No three-year-old has won the race since it opened to older horses way back in 1997, and that’s going to be a tough trend to break for the inexperienced Shirl’s Speight. But he has a lot of speed and distance shouldn’t be a problem. I expect him to go for the front out of the gate and try to hang on for as long as he can. I’ll use him underneath March To The Arch in a straight exacta.
